If we weren't paranoid, were'd we get all those nice conspiracy theories from then ?
We'd be bereft, mate.

BTW, I find it funny that the original poster is wary about uploading stuff to Amazon's cloud while having a Dropbox affiliate link

Dropbox is cloud too

Maybe, but better safe, than sorry.

Dropbox is cloud too
True.

Except, AFAIK, Dropbox doesn't have a history of removing items from their storage. Amazon does - not just the '1984' debacle, but their prior experiment with ebooks, before the Kindle. When they decided to end that, folks lost access to all their books practically overnight.

I would never use the cloud as my only means of storage, and whether I trust a company not to root around in it would depend on past experience.

But then, I don't store anything in Dropbox that I would mind someone else seeing, either.

FWIW, I do use Amazon's Cloud MP3 player - but not as my only copy of anything.

Everything E-whatever I buy is stored on my machines hd , backed to an external hd and also bundled, when enough files are gathered and then burned to a CD/DVD. There is no way I would trust off site storage for anything. And as some here has said, "Here, today, gone tomorrow."

I also like wearing a belt and suspenders!

IMO nowdays as gazillions of pieces of data about one can be collected, sorted and analyzed by more and more computing power something like being too paranoid is not possible.

I don't rely on the cloud for storage, I rely on it to "feed" my Fire. I would like to have all my books on the Amazon cloud, as then I wouldn't need to have my computer to send a book to the Fire. But since Amazon is in the business of selling books (with DRM intact), having 3000 books in their cloud, with nary a one having DRM, and perhaps having some trace of where it originally came from within the metadata, doesn't seem like a good idea.

I don't think Dropbox presents the same risk. But I would never rely just on the cloud for backup. I used to have all my books on Dropbox, but I ran out of space. Therefore, I am begging for people to sign up with Dropbox so I get more space (I now remember why I went in-house - I hate, hate, hate trolling for clients (or bites)). I have a local back-up of my entire computer, and a separate back-up of my Calibre library on two different hard drives. But this does me no good with the Fire, if I am sitting at work and want to read a book (of course, why should I be looking for a book to read, when I am supposed to be working, anyway!).
