So everyone who's bought one of these error-filled ebooks is sending their complaints to Gollancz, right?

I don't get why publishers put out half assed ebooks for back titles and then charge so high. They already have made money from the original edition now they are likely to loose sales to used books and libraries anyway if they put out ebooks of good quality they could minimize their losses.
The people that go to used book stores and libraries are heavy readers more likely to own ebook readers it just not make business sense to alienate them.

I bought the same stainless steel rat book and was also concerned about the number of errors. I DID report them to the publisher. Their response was very reasonable. They apologised profusely and said they would remove the book from sale and fix it. Let's see what happens next!

Harry Harrison would be turning in his grave if he was dead. It's a shame he didn't release them himself, then at least he would have done it properly.

so +1 on that

and another is that is that they haven't been omnibused - it isn't as if they were voluminous tomes

Are there publishers that seriously OCR? Don't they already have all their modern or reissued works already digitally rendered somehow in PDF or Latex and just need to mark it up into EPUB or convert it with a script?

I bet there are some publishers that ripped off Project Gutenberg intro text and charge for it, lol...

They may have PDFs of some of their back-titles... maybe. But PDF is a destination document not a source document—conversion to PDF tends to be a one-way street. So unless they kept the source that they built the PDF from, there is no easy, automated, scriptable path from PDF to ePub.

For those that may be interested, they eventually did fix 'The Stainless Steel Rat Wants You!' Unfortunately it took about 6 months!!!!

That's sad news, because I recently discovered one of my fav. scifantasy-series (World of Tiers by Jose Farmer) finally being available as ebook... by the same publisher. If there's OCR errors inside I won't buy it (esp. not at this price). But it fits the picture as they didn't even keep the cover art (or make new cover art if they couldn't get the rights to the existing ones).

I might have to scan it myself after all...

The yellow covers are a bit of a Gollancz tradition.

I read my first SFGateway book a couple of weeks ago, and the quality was fine. I guess it depends on the condition of the original. They do apparently have some sort of QC - they did hold back some books because they weren't up to scratch. It makes you wonder how bad those must have been.

I kind of feel like project is already dying, which is a great shame. There don't seem to have been many new releases lately. I expressed my problems with the pricing in their forum some time ago. None of the books I've bought from them (15 or so) have been at the higher price. I bought most of them in their sale over Christmas.
