From your preferences, you might try The Saint by Leslie Charteris or Ed McBain 49th precinct. And Jack Higgins is always a good read.
Raymond Chandler is classic, and for something different try Robert B. Parker Westerns. Totally cut and dried, but a very good read. Can't go wrong with Elmore Leonard or Robert Crais either IMO |

I am going to start William Ryan's The Holy Thief. It sounds interesting and I will let y'all know what I think after I read it. It may take me a while this time of year. I own a jewelry store and also am a bench jeweler. I will be real busy for the next month.

I am still reading "The Greek Coffin Mystery" and I just got to the part where the author stops and says 'You now have all the clues necessary to solve the mystery,' which I truely enjoy. I like how this is written. Do Ellery Queen's other books also have this statement at a point in the story?

Some of them do, but not all. John Dickson Carr, or Carter Dickson (same guy, he wrote under both names), occasionally also had statements like that. If I remember right, he and Queen used to have a competition going on who would be the first to write a mystery the other couldn't solve.

I would recommend Asimov's Mysteries published in 1968. As one might expect, they are science-fiction, but Asimov prided himself in making them mysteries too--and ones that were capable of being worked out from the facts given in the stories. In one case, he admitted that certain discoveries made after the story had been published made the solution unworkable. But he felt that the reader would now have a mystery to figure out which one it was and why the "solution" wouldn't work. The stories are written in Asimov's lucid style and are very enjoyable.
I would be very surprised if this book {which I have in hard copy} is not available electronically. |
