Come on EowynCarter, despite of what JSWolf usually does, he is right.
There is nothing in this video that distinguishes the Odyssey from any other latest-gen reader in terms of speed, in fact, my Kindle 3 performs just the same. The animation really is the only thing that hints at what the Odyssey might be capable of, but the videos show that it is not (yet). I myself was really excited about it as a reader especially for my PDF files, but the way I can see it, it handles PDFs really worse than Sony does, the way Sony did two years ago. I will pay attention to the development of the device but right now it would be just random to buy it, it has no advantages over other well established systems, in fact cannot compete in terms of dictionaries or proper annotation support. |

As to pdf, i find the odyssey is the best reader i've own for this. Including the sony-T1. Well, some said the re-flow function was not as good as the 650. Though it's still reading pdf on a 6". Quote:

I know we are encouraged to discuss opinions and not persons but, nevertheless, let me defend Jon. He definitely is not a troll. He knows a lot about ebook readers and ebook making and especially in the "E-Book Formats" section he gives a lot of useful help. And even in his many many posts that evoke negative reactions he more often than not has a point. Eowyn, think back some time ago when you had a problem in the Calibre subforum. You received a lot of personal harsh comments (being called a troll was not the worst) and very little real discussion about your arguments. And contrary to this, we here in the Bookeen section know you not as troll but as a very helpful and knowing person and are glad to have you around. It's not always that easy and not always that black and white. ![]() |

I can understand Bookeen's commercial decision to only include a French-language dictionary in the Odyssey, given that their primary market is the French-speaking countries of Europe, but it's certainly going to make the Odyssey much less attractive to many. The omission of any form of annotation is just baffling. Why do Bookeen make such great hardware and then spoil it by releasing half-finished firmware? That's always been their weakness, unfortunately.

If it does indeed have annotation abilities then I'm very pleased to be wrong! It's high time that Bookeen added this capability - it was very much lacking in the earlier models.

The Orizon has annotations (though not freehand) and bookmarks.

Odyssey actually have annotation (not standalone mode) but it's yet not very useful : only one line can be typed in.

(Of course what would be even more useful for them is an English-French-English dictionary, but an English-English could also be useful) But really: when you get engrossed in a book and there's a word you don't understand, do you really stop reading and look up the word? I never ever ever do that. It would destroy the joy of reading. I just guess from the context and go on. I tried that once, in my teens, when I was trying to read "Moby Dick" and it had all those nautical words. Needless to say, I never went past chapter one, it was so boring, like a school assignment. Reading is supposed to be pleasure, rapture, ecstasy and totally being carried away. Even with non-fiction. Searching for words and annotating is only good for study purposes, cannot think of any other use! Last edited by irmar; 12-11-2011 at 08:24 AM. |
