My story from about 2 months ago. Dropped from about 2 feet into a bathtub (full). Total immersion time about 3 seconds. Towel dried. Later put into a ziploc with some rice; wait 3 days. Result: KT has worked fine since then.

Typical signs. A strip up the LH side and the bottom of the screen show only vertical lines. Also my PC no longer sees it as a USB device, which seems odd. It's going back to WH Smiths tomorrow.
W H Smiths replaced it.

Awesome! I've heard of that working with cellphones too. Uncooked rice is a moisture sponge.

Great idea - must try that next time I drop something into water - last time was when my son dropped his watch down the toilet

This morning I dropped my Kobo (original - not the touch) and broke the screen. I had previously dropped it at least five different times (closer to ten times) without incident during the last fifteen months of ownership. All drops between three to five feet in height and with or without soft leather Roots sleeve. This last incident, the Kobo was inside the Roots sleeve, but the impact may have been harder than before because I flipped it off the edge of the table while I was dropping my arm, and the Kobo was flipping through the air like a tossed coin.

The Kobo still functions but the bottom left-hand corner of the screen is toast.

I've read a few pages, and (depending on the formatting of the epub) at most I cut off one or two words, but it's annoying.

So, this afternoon I went and purchased a Kobo Touch. I'll ask around to see if anyone I know wants a broken Kobo original.

I have a Kobo WiFi that now lives at a friend's house. After a bad fall, it is now held together with duct tape. Works fine, but it isn't very pretty.

Dropped my Touch while standing up from desk chair. Maybe a 2 foot drop onto a hardwood floor.

Poor Touch was demolished, the screen fractured. After reading about everyone else's good luck, I suppose I must have had an unlucky bounce. Luckily this happened in the general vicinity of my birthday. Guess what I got as a prezzie?

Have you been reading MR? If you had been, you'd have read that pockets are a broken reader waiting to happen. Sleeves are also a reader waiting to be dropped and break.

You should avoid pockets and use a proper cover.

A case that breaks apart a bit when you drop something is a positive sign. It indicates that the case took the damage and not the device.

These are really light devices. My phone weighs the same but my phone is only about 1/3rd the surface area so from the same height my phone is more likely to break.

Mine dropped two feet from my night table, on to carpet. It was sitting on top of its sleeve, so I guess that can fit into the "sleeves are evil" narrative. It flipped as it was falling and banged something on the way down. I now have a couple of dead pixels in left-centre of the screen. I've grown to ignore them.

It's common to have problems if you unplug it like that before "ejcting" so I'd say yes, you're screwed. Just do a factory reset. Any books you own can be re-downloaded. Any books you stole are gone, which you sort of deserve

Word of warning to all those who drop it, or "plan to".

The screen itself is made from glass. enough dropping can crack the screen, even if it doesn't appear cracked. this goes for any E-reader.
