I've done an article about eye strain a few years back. You only get eye strain when you turn up the contrast and brightness too high (or too low)!

I'd say yes, we are doomed to LCD or whatever else technology will be used in tablets or whatever you call the multi-purpose devices.

eInk likely will die together with eReaders, if they don't evolve fast. And from what I gather here, the majority (vocal minority?) doesn't want them to be anything more than text-displaying-devices.

Once tablet prices drop to those of cheap eReaders AND have good LC-Displays, I don't think there are many who will spend the money on a device as limited as an eReader.

I'm not sure if I'd buy an eReader today, if I were to start off new and now know the advantage of eInk.

So, yes, the display is important - but a good LC-Display is often good enough and the fact that it can do a thousand things more will be an incentive for many to buy it, instead of an eInk-Device that is artificially kept low and single-purposed.

--

I'll admit I don't know too much about all the various eInk devices, but I'm sure I'd have heard of it if there were an eInk Device that is as multi-purposed as an Android device.

There already is colour eInk, it's just a bit washed out and not really in mass production, or used by a mainsteam ebook reader yet.

There are other reflective technologies being developed that will bring colour to ebook readers. Mirasol is probably closest to market, but Liquavista also looks interesting.

And when the refresh rate is too low, of course, as many people can and will tell you. 1280x800@75Hz on this 19" LCD monitor and I can read fine. Same rez at 60Hz causes eye strain/fatigue within 10 minutes, usually (and I can't even go 5 minutes at the monitor's native 1440x900@60Hz).
