The reason is consistency. All news downloads are set to have the same author and publisher. Incidentally, if you are doing this from the command line you should be able to override any piece of metadata you like with the appropriate command line option to ebook-convert. The metadata restrictions apply only to running news downloads in the GUI.

As for publication_type, there isn't much point to it. The purpose of that field was to help calibre distinguish between news and normal ebooks. There is no code anywhere to make sue of finer distinctions.

You want smarten_punctuation, note the underscore.

I appreciate your clarification about the author and publisher and the reasoning which now makes perfect sense.

I hadn't realized the purpose of publication_type and now see why the possible value list is so small.

Thanks for the smarten_punctuation help as well. Now that I've got that I can remove the command line option and run it from the recipe instead.
