One thing to note about these new Amazon covers is that they use a smooth leather which tends to scratch very easily. After using it for a couple of days, I noticed the back of mine was already scratched and I have not traveled with it yet. The pebbled leather of previous covers did not exhibit this scratching as easily.

Oh dear that sounds like my phone case. I wonder if it's lamb instead of cow leather?

I bought hubby a lamb leather wallet one Christmas. It wasn't cheap but it began to show wear within two weeks and look horrible within a month.

The K3 case is tough. It's quality and still looks like the day I bought it which was almost a year ago now.

I'm concerned about the molded area where the kindle sits - does it just pop in? what's to keep it from popping out again if the case gets bent a bit?

I ordered a cover with the led light, although its out of stock. I'm hoping its in stock soon. Anyone hear anything about them?

The cradle (molded area where the Kindle sits) is very sturdy and you won't have to worry about the Kindle popping out. The cradle is made out of a sturdy plastic and has a rubber perimeter that holds the K4 in place. The cover will not bend where the cradle is so no worry about it popping out accidentally. It actually takes a bit of work using both hands to remove the K4 from the cradle.

If you look at the photos in my post above you can see that the rubber perimeter grips and holds the K4 in the cradle, and yes the K4 just snaps in.

Just for comparison, I used to own a Sony PRS-350 with the Sony Standard Cover. For those of you familiar with the Sony Standard Covers for the x50 series, this Kindle cover is about the same thickness of material but probably has a little better quality of construction. Plus it is entirely leather on the exterior.

JacK? Are you familiar with the weight of the Amazon Lighted case for the K3/KK? I ask, becuase I had forgotten how incredibly heavy the case makes the K3 as compared to with out it, and I'm wondering if you noticed any similar difference with the case and the K4.

Yes, I've got the Amazon Lighted cover on my K3 and it is a very heavy case. That is the main reason I opted to not get the lighted cover for the K4. An interesting comparison is that the Amazon Lighted cover for the K3 without the K3 inside weighs about as much as the Amazon Leather cover for the K4 with the K4 inside!

The Amazon Leather cover for the K4 is way lighter than the K4 itself. I don't have a postage scale to weigh them on, but I estimate that the cover is no more than half the weight of the K4, so it does not add a noticeable amount of weight to the K4 . By comparison, the Marware cover I got weighs about the same as the K4, or appx. twice the weight of this Amazon cover.

Interesting. I wonder if they were able to get the weight of the newer lighted cases down any. If I do end up getting the touch I know I want a lighted case so that I do not have to worry about keeping track of a book light.

you can always duct tape it to the back of the cover

Although I don't have either lighted cover, some searching gives these approximate weights:

450 grams - Kindle 3 Keyboard (225g) + K3 Amazon lighted cover (225g)
310 grams - Kindle 4 NT (170g) + K4 Amazon lighted cover (140g)

Given that my K3 + non-Amazon case + external light weighs in at 410 grams, I'm looking forward to the new lighted case.
