Gizmodo is not an acredited computer magazine, I would recommend paying more attention to PC World and/or PC Magazine.

Well yeah, truth in that....but that's exactly why I was asking someone who might know -- e.g. the knowledgeable MobileRead patrons.

The problem is, "Barney Fife" individuals are "shooting their one bullet" in burning 1Q84 with one-star reviews on Amazon without bothering to check if this crappy article is true. Very sad.

Yes, very much so! I still plan on reading it, but was hoping for the price to drop.

I just purchased 1Q84 and I've downloaded it to three devices so far. Gizmodo should be pitched into the "Lake of Fire."

Thank you for that confirmation! I'll help with the pitching! Just checked the Amazon site --- they are spamming it with 1 star spam!

I feel like I should post there saying otherwise...

The skunk from Gizmodo claims only one device is allowed and public highlights don't don't work...both untrue. We only have his word to believe that CS informed him that the book is restricted to one download. I would tend to believe that was an outright lie...seeing as the rest of the article was FUD. The pinheads who question nothing they read on the web have drug the book's rating down to 2.5 stars. That's a dirty, rotten shame. I'm sure he intended the article as linkbait. I hope he doesn't succeed.

I heard this was a really good book. It is on my "possible" list.

I think it is a good idea to take "reviews" on Amazon with a grain of salt. I scan a few of the negatives to see if it is a political diatribe (conservatives all trashing a liberal book, liberals all trashing a conservative book) or people with an axe to grind (cost of book, or something like this).

It is very annoying when this happens as it cheapens all the reviews and may result in lost sales.

I particularly don't put any faith in the negative reviews at all (nor the glowing ones for that matter) but read them to see if it sounds like a book I'd enjoy.

Probably more lost sales than all of piracy combined.

While this Gizmodo article is clearly shite, I do find it a little disconcerting that Amazon doesn't seem to be making it clear to customers (in all cases) when the publisher imposed device-limit on an ebook is below the default of six. They used to do so.

The difference between 5 and 6 (in the case of 1Q84) is trivial enough to not get worked up over, but there seems to be several legitimate examples where the device limit is truly set to one (usually on more expensive non-fiction/reference textbooks) and yet nothing on the product description indicates this.

The publishers can set whatever limit they want, but Amazon needs to make it clear to customers anytime that the publisher-imposed device limit is less than their traditional six. And a one-device limit deserves a flashing red banner.

I can always remove the DRM if I'm restricted in such a ridiculous way (with no indication at the time of purchase), but I'd rather be able to voice my objection by withholding my hard earned cash from the get-go.

I've downloaded to three devices and while reading on the iPhone I sometimes get a message if a passage has been highlighted by others.

I think it would be far easy for Amazon to simply list the "Simultaneous Device Usage" on every product page, rather than relying on a semi-random approach.
