I'm a novice at this but i did have courses in Boolean Algebra (though I wasn't on TV). However, what is stored is not a zero nor a one. What is "stored" is a magnetic particle that represents a bit of data. NO?

Does the battery charge state affect "weight" too?

Obviously this is yet more proof that DRM is a burden on consumers.

So, if you want to dig under the tech covers of how SSD's work see here:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/e...-ssds-and-you/ It seems I was wrong (once again) in my earlier musings. A storage space in an SSD drive is basically a 'bucket' that holds a charge. In simple terms, a low level charge (around 2.5V) is a 1 and a higher voltage (5.5) is a zero. I should note that current SSD's support recognize more than two levels per cell or bucket. When a bucket is filled with a charge it needs to start from zero. If I 'inject' a charge of 2.5V and I don't know what my starting charge was, then I will not know what my ending charge will be. There are several ways to handle it, but the one that has been chosen is to empty out the cells before they are overwritten. This means that the total net charge after a write operation will only be a result of the new charge inserted in the field and will not be influenced by any existing charge. However, emptying the cells can take a smidgen of time. If each write needs to first empty its target cells and then write out the data, it will slow down write speeds. So, to make writes faster, cells are emptied when they are erased. This means that a subsequent write knows that it starts with empty cells and doesn't need to do any emptying of its own. The bottom line is that empty cells will have no charge -- not a random value of 1 or 0, but no charge and thus, no value at all. Filling up a cell raises its charge to appropriate voltage level. So whether a one or zero is written there will be an increase in charge/energy. Thus, books do have higher energy and weigh more than empty memory. Last edited by emellaich; 11-01-2011 at 05:02 PM. |
