No, I've mostly just tried converting them with Calibre. I used to send to the Amazon conversion service but I stopped after I started using Calibre heavily. Is MobiCreator Pro the same as Mobipocket Creator?

I believe that is the new name, yes. There used to be two editions (both free and one limited -- don't know why anyone used the baby edition).

Mobipocket reader can do some conversions, but is much more limited and doesn't let you properly edit the metadata.

With Creator, you split out the raw HTML (and it dumps those pesky header/footer sections) and can even edit that if you wish (but I seldom do, unless there is a bit issue).

I'm glad you reminded me. I had been meaning to get some of the Mercedes Lackey multiformat short stories from FW.

And I also ended up with one Kenneth Flint, a couple of reprints of hard-to-find Marion Zimmer Bradley Gothics. Hurray for e-backlists!

I picked up that MZB gothic in the New Releases list, too. Curious as to how it'll compare to her sf/fantasy work.

I also got from the new releases a Houdini non-fiction bio and a short story collection by the excellent and recommended Maureen F. McHugh, who happens to have another, free Creative Commons-licensed one over at Small Beer Press, which I've owned in paper format for years.

to getting nice new sf/fantasy at a 15% discount and another 55% off from one of my favourite authors. I hope FW continues to have nice stuff with the new batch on Monday.

Bummer. Powerlines are still down from the freak snowstorm last weekend -- I'm posting from a public wi-fi and not willing to risk my credit card info.

Ahh, well. There'll be another one, eventually.

Thanks so much for this tip! I finally got around to trying out a couple of conversions with the MPCreator and it's so much neater than what I get with Calibre. I love that it gets rid of those headers/footers that drive me bananas, lol. My only issue is that there are no spaces between the paragraphs - is there any way to tweak the program to fix this?

Once you finish in MobiPocket Creator run the prc file through Calibre to add spaces, indent and metadata.

Ooh!! I know about adding metadata in Calibre - I do that for all my books (including descriptions) before converting, but I didn't know I could add spaces and indent! Thanks a mil!

Welcome. It's in the Look and Feel setting in the conversion window.

The easiest way it to just check both boxes, "Remove Spacing between paragraphs" and "Insert Blank line between paragraphs" then
edit their settings to what you want.

I've had a few recent ones that even required multiple trips thru Calibre (and I wish you could turn off the "orig_xxx" creation, as it keeps wanting to run the conversion from that, if it exists), in order to do cleanup. One was numbered on every single line (so, removing line numbers, extra hard returns, formatting paragraphs, dumping header/footers, fixing chapters, adding hard new page, etc. More than could be done with the limit of 3 REGEX per conversion in Calibre. In the end, though, I have a nice, clean file (I did have to cheat a bit and do some cut/paste in the files inside the epub, this was one stubbornly badly formatted galley).

You can turn off that feature. It's in the tweaks settings I believe.
