They can't. They only did that to clear out inventory.

In fact, restarting TouchPad sales could be problematic since they'd have to charge a lot more for them than the $99 deal. "Why should I pay $249 when they sold a bunch for $99?"

Those were sold at lost. It is not possible to make a 90 bucks TP and make some profit, mathematical and engineering speaking. Not at this moment, who knows in 2, 3 or more years. So because companies work for profit, not charity ... ... I'm afraid that won't happen again.

I have some peers that bought one or two and gave those to their children so they can at least, browse Internet with it. Very cheap "laptop" if we can call it that way.

I would not take out of the equation another HP tablet though, but that's something that probably will be seriously evaluated before launching it officially again.

I understand that HP is reconsidering the Tablet Business as well.

In fact they are going to move to Windows 8 for their tablet efforts:

I have one and it's still stock. The app store sucks big time, so I may go with a dual boot (Android/ webOS) in the future. Still, it's a great tablet for surfing the net and streaming videos. Prime Instant Videos stream beautifully on it; a definite plus.

Even if I never use another app on it, streaming videos and surfing the net make the purchase well worth it.

What we really need are several models (with varying features) of tablets running stock Android and selling for $199~349. Concentrate on the hardware; let Google handle the OS, and let others provide the content. Mass produce these things and sell them in all the chains. In other words, do to tablets what you did to laptops.

That's what's missing from the tablet market right now.

I have hp printers, a hp laptop, and old hp PDA, an old dell desktop, and laptop.
I have a keyboard kindle, but no tablet.

I don't like Apple and I am not sure about all this Android stuff. I would like a windows tablet.

Dell is going with Win7 on their tablets, and if HP is going with Win8.
I may choose one of those for my tablet.

I don't know about Win 8, it may be better for the purpose, but Windows has been a poor tablet OS in the past. Too bloated, and not optimized for touch interfaces. The user experience has been pretty poor (before now).
Of course, it does have the advantage of being able to run all the existing Windows stuff. Which is a big advantage.

It's been a sad period for HP lately with the various mismanagement, and for a company with a history of some great innovation they just haven't been all that interesting of late. I personally feel this is the right move for now until they are certain of their next step. The uncertainty of their pre-announcement was not helpful, nor did it feel like the dynamics of such a move had really been well thought out.

The whole Palm/webOS story is all a little sad though. I've never played with webOS myself, but from all reports it had some nice ideas and a decent framework for developing applications. It will be interesting to see what they do with it now.

.. but then I also thought Meego looked interesting, and those who played with the Nokia N9 seemed to report that it also was a nice little OS, but I guess when you do the maths the notion of trying to develop a whole ecosystem around a platform when you now have some established parties (with deep pockets) does make it a tough sell.

I really want XP on a tablet or even Ubuntu like on my net-book. I don't need apps to check on where the bars and women are and how to get to there. I already know. Those app people just have to ask me and I will tell them. And anything I don't know, Google will fill in.

And that brings up that this is Saturday, and I am off to update my database on all those things just mentioned.
