To everyone who wrote: I have a First Class Honours degree, a PhD, and the brain of a flea. You are all correct, I'd simply failed to apply the protector properly and left bubbles between the screen and the glass. Thank you all for pointing out what should have been blindingly obvious. My Kobo and I are now living in harmony once again.

True, but it only works for binary since binary 10 is equivalent to decimal 2 and the joke refers to 2 things.

Well, it wouldn't work in other base systems since octal would mean there are 8 types of people, decimal would mean 10, duodec would mean 12, etc..

There is a similar joke of how a programmer got Halloween and Christmas mixed up.. OCT 31 = DEC 25..
