Fetch Annotations is Greyed out
I installed calibre 2.19 on Linux and I have successfully connected my Note 3 to calibre; however, the option "Fetch Annotations (experimental)" is grayed out. How can I activate it?

You will need to ask that in the calibre forums. But, the fetch annotations is not supported for all devices. And other than the Kobo e-ink ereaders, I don't know which devices it is supported for.

Fetching annotations works currently with my Kobo. My preference however I would like to import the notes to a custom field, not the comment field. How would I go about that? I looked up the plugin in calibre but it says plugin doesn't need customization. Thanks

That is correct, the Fetch Annotations built-in to calibre has no configuration options. Try the Annotations plugin instead. It can be customised to put the annotations in another column.

Thank you. I did come across that but initially was skeptical and dismissed it because I got the impression it was only for importing annotations from software, not actual devices...

Hello to all!
I could love to see a screen shot of what those annotations look like. Could you send me one of the annotations as they appear in Calibre? Thanks to all, B. |

Nice!
When you send a book back to the Kobo device, using calibre, does it also sends annotations or is this process one way only? |

Ok, thanks. So backing up the database currently is the best way to backup annotations if you want to be able to see them on your eReader again, right?

I do two things with my highligts and annotations.
To read them easily on the computer later, I use the function to import the annotation to a separate column in Calibre To be able to reload them back on the device in case of device failure, I simply copy the annotations files that is stored seperately in the Digital edition folder on the device. As a backup that I put somewhere. If the device brakes down or I buy another Kobo reader I can just put them back along with the books. Important to use the same file structure though. Annotations and Highlighs
I have a question for marp68
what do the annotations and highlights look like on calibre? Could you post a picture here, so that I can see how easy they are to read? Can you get the annotations and highlights to display in separate columns in Calibre, so that it's easy to distinguish between my annotations and the highlights from the text? There used to be a tool for Sony Readers to export highlights and annotations as an html-file. I've attached a picture to show you how highlights and annotations are separate. Unfortunately, Sony Readers are not backlit, and the annotations were limited to just 200 characters, plus they are no longer being manufactured. I make so many annotations, and how easily they can be read, and searched, is important. ![]() |

I just made some printscreens. As shown some does not looks as organized as yours. I haven't any saved annotations but I think they enda up in the same column. I think I tried that before. Hey, I tried a lot of things with my new ereader..., but forget quickly. There is the plug in called Annotation that one can put on on the menu bar. Then there is a program called ToxAnnotationExporter. Neither can be imported back to a new device along with the book.
But trying the Kobo Utilities plug in option for annotations I think turns out quite well if you would like to read it immediately, Copy annotation for selected book. The option Back up annotations seems to create a text file with a lot of code in it as well. Not easy to read. Turned out better when first choosing Copy annotations for selected book, then choose Copy to clipboard and then paste it in, for example, Word, and then save that. Clean and easy to read immediately or/and save for later use. See last image. Hope that helps... Good luck |
