I deleted all metadata tags from Calibre and changed the settings so it doesn't download tags any longer.

When you get hundreds of books, only have a few collections generates exactly what the OP didn't want, collections of large numbers of books.

Only way to have hundreds of books and smaller collections is finer graduations.

And you can do folder-like setup, where collections have multiple names.

So you can have as collections:

Fiction-SciFi-Asimov
Fiction-Thriller-Patterson
Fiction-Mystery-XXXX

User friendly? No.

If you're a developer or comfortable with SQL, PRS-T1 uses a sqllite3 db and you can use your favorite client to create collections. I'd recommend looking at the T1 driver in the calibre source code if you're interesting to see how it T1 manages metadata internally, Kolenka has done a lot of work reverse engineering the db when he wrote the driver.

A bit of programing and i'll make that user friendly.
One more things to add to my e-book management program i guess. I can even use my folders names and i don't have to bother re-tagging my books.

Wow you guys are organized! I sometimes create a collection of a series usually. And while I love Calibre I find I have to delete the extra tags it will pull up in metadata. (But I'm liking the categories of Read, To read, and Currently). I think I really need Currently because sometimes the T1 will forget what I am currently reading. The other day I noticed the clock was wrong on the reader so I set it to the correct time and in the Currently Reading it put the book I had finished an hour earlier. D'OH!

You can set Calibre to NOT download each part of the metadata. Mine is set to NOT download tags and ratings.

With PRS+ on my 650, I have the option of the last 3 books opened on my home screen, or the next 3 books in the collection (typicaly series), 3 otehr books by the same author, last 3 books added (stock), or 3 random books.

Calibre is so versatile and you can set it up to do just about anything you want. I have it set to get tags from Goodreads but only the 3 most popular. This usually gives me the granularity that I want on my tags.

I generally stick with the broad genre collections eg Fantasy, Science Fiction, Young Adult. Though for larger series or authors with more than ten books I give them their own Collection (I have a Rogue Angel collection, a Mercedes Lackey collection etc), as well as a Reading Now collection and Planned Reads collection.

If I recall correctly this plugin comes configured with around 60 general tags mapped from Goodreads. This means you won't end up with more tags than 60. I mapped another 170 tags from Goodreads so the most tags I'll end up with is around 230. The good thing about this metadata plugin is that it allows you to map exactly the tag names you want and limit your downloaded tags to a finite number.

I believe I "borrowed" your mapping! I just don't get more than 3 tags per book.
