New Kindle format: KF8 - Page 2

Sony put ADE on the old PRS-500. Given that the K1 has better specs then a 500, there is no reason Amazon could not support KF8 on all Kindles.

Since kf8 will be readable on all existing kindles and on the KFire, I don't see that anything is being splintered. Although of course the distinction between Amazon and Epub is being maintained.

I am very curious to see what the new format can do, though - and if anyone will take advantage of it.

For that matter, this is probably good news for Sony/Nook users, since it might encourage them to adopt epub 3, which afaik, no e-readers support yet.

The FAQ quoted earlier only mentions "latest generation" Kindle devices, and apps. Which is, by omission, essentially a statement that the K3 and prior won't support it.

I take it as the K3 and K4 will support KF8. But no idea if the DXG will or not.

So this would mean that the DX, K1 & K2 will be out and owners will have to upgrade or be SOL.

Bold added by me. Amazon says clearly latest generation Kindles TWICE. They don't actually say that all Kindles will get KF8 support.

What Amazon says is...

A: No. The upcoming updates to our Kindle Publishing Tools will take care of this for you. KindleGen 2 will convert your content so that it works on all Kindle devices and apps. You will be able to preview how your title will look on the range of Kindle devices and apps using Kindle Previewer 2.

All that says is the new software will handle things. It doesn't say KF8 will be available to older Kindles.

All new books will be readable on old and new kindles. Presumably only the newer kindles will support all of the extra features k8 is bringing. Older Kindles will continue to be as functional as they are today.

So if you make your eBook look nice using the new features of KF8, then you'll have a suboptimal reading experience if you have an old Kindle. I don't think that will sit well with a lot of people.

It sounds to me like they will support ePub at some point. From their Kindle Format Overview web page:

Indeed, that's actually an option now for the current Kindlegen - drag an epub to it and it converts to mobi.
