But the DXG belongs to the 2.0 firmware family, does it not? The kindle 3 belongs to the 3.0 firmware family. There's always been the distinction right from the start. I know enabling personal doc syncing is a matter of a simple tweak, but every company deliberately tries to distinguish between generations so people will want to upgrade. It's hardly discrimination

I think that's an assumption that may or may not be valid. It seems like it should be true, but without examining the code, we can't be sure one way or the other. It may be that the v2.x firmware is a horrible, hacky mess that is a nightmare to maintain. If that's the case, then adding features (even apparently simple ones) could be very difficult and time consuming.

No, it isn't. Personal document syncing was never an advertised feature when the kindle 4's were rolled out. That's the key point. It'd only be a Kindle-4-specific feature if it were advertised as a Kindle 4 feature from the start, and was then ported over to the Kindle 3. That isn't the case.

Is it not simply due to the Kindle DX only being a 3G device and as such it would either cost:
a) Amazon b) Users c) Both A LOT to transfer documents over 3G? There is of course the problem of releasing an update for an "old" product. |

Just because Amazon provided this update almost at the same time this feature was introduced in "K4" does not mean they do not discriminate. |

So, you should expect them to provide that update exactly for that same reason. ![]() |

Because you mentioned that this is a Kindle 4 feature, and I wanted to explain why I disagree. With all the best of intentions, mate, let me say that I think it's unreasonable to expect a company to roll out updates (that aren't bug fixes) for any and all generations it has on the market, especially for a product that's two generations behind. I think there's a misplaced sense of entitlement here. Companies do this all the time. They want their latest offerings to be more desirable for obvious commercial reasons, and it's merely a bonus if they provide something extra that wasn't a feature when the product was initially purchased.

No, that's a logical fallacy. You're assuming that Amazon had an obligation to provide that update at all. They didn't.

The problem is the KDXG has not seen any significant updates, while the K3 firmware gets constantly updated and improved. Couple it with the fact the K3 firmware runs without glitches on the KDXG and you'll get the whole picture (almost). |

Don't think so. No, sir. And again, whether they had an obligation or not is irrelevant. They are discriminating, nonetheless. Last edited by eLiNK; 10-20-2011 at 11:07 AM. |

Very few companies will continue to provide meaningful support for their previous generation products, let alone release free software updates with new features. Yes, although you don't seem to realise that the word "discrimination" carries no negative meaning unless you're talking about persecuting people. |

Are you sure about that? The DX hasn't been listed on the Kindle page since the new model Kindles were announced. I wouldn't be surprised to discover that production of the DX has ceased. If so, when the last of the new ones are sold, that's it.
