eta: i've been trying to find out more about the STR, but the main reason I want Wi-Fi is to be able to download books from my Sugarsync account. I see reports of STR just eating anything you download off of the "hidden web browser".. that worries me. If I need to hook up in order to get books on the Nook, the wi-fi is pretty much useless to me.
Yout mention in your first paragraph, that you are open to rooting. If that is the case, then your concerns regarding downloading via sugarsync should be moot. My rooted STR is able to access my dropbox account via wifi - so my calibre library etc. is readily available. Note - this is using the dropbox app; I'm not familiar with Sugarsync, but I assume it would be comparable.

Do you guys think the price of these will drop any further since new Kindle Touches are only $99 now?

Since they price-matched the Kindle Touch and made a new NST $99, I don't see them needing to drop the price on the refurbs.

Fair enough, I just thought they might to make sure there is some sort of noticeable difference on the pricing between a new and a refurb (the $20 pricing difference is lessened even more by the fact that a new one is eligible for membership discounts whereas a refurb is not.)

OTOH, the refurb includes an AC adapter and the new pricing model does not (it's a $10 accessory from B&N).

Thanks, Yeah I did see that. Unfortunately it's useless to me since I'm in Australia!

*edit Well, unless I travel to the US that is!

I'm not seeing the AC adapter on the refurbished Nook STR web page. Perhaps they recently removed it?

You can use any regular micro-USB charger to charge the Nook Touch. You are not limited to the B&N one.

what exactly are refurbs? used/repaired devices? items without proper packaging?

My refurbished STR arrived with the proper packaging and I can't find anything that would differentiate it from new (no dings, scuffs, or defects). Except perhaps for it coming with only version 1.0.1 of the firmware pre-installed. Oh yeah, and it included an AC adapter! <grin>

Does anyone know how to force a firmware update to v1.1.0?
(nevermind, for some reason the B&N Software Updates page wasn't displaying the "Get Version 1.1.0 Today" section when I originally checked it... at least, that is my story, and I'm sticking to it!)
