Geez, there's even competition in death. Can't we just mourn those who have passed without it being "my dead guy was better than your dead guy?"

You guys really can't help yourselves can you? Disgusting! The men are dead for goodness sakes.
This thread is about Dennis Ritchie may he Rest in Peace. My condolences to his friends and family. My thanks for his work and achievements which have helped my husband remain gainfully employed as a self-taught programmer and developer. |

Tearful Salutes from every pointer that was ever created or used...
The world still rests on many of his and his teams creations. What a man..what creativity. From a lowly humble person..thanks..and may your soul rest in peace!! |

Genesis
Chapter 0 0 In the Beginning Ritchie created the PDP-11 and the UNIX. 1 And the UNIX was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the system programmers. 2 And Ritchie said, "Let there be portability!" And nothing happened, so Ritchie realized that he had his work cut out for him. ... Read the rest of the "C Bible" |

t's very sad news about Dennis Ritchie. I had a very dog-eared copy of the white book for more than 25 years; it finally disappeared last year. It was a great introduction to C.
He did leave a marvelous legacy. It's had to see how the net would have become so pervasive a part of our lives without Unix. I'm accessing the forums right now using FreeBSD, a descendent of Unix (42 years and still growing) , thanks to the work of Dennis Ritchie, Ken Thompson and others. Hats off to them. |

Gotta admit, when I first saw the name for the death announcement, it didn't dawn on me who it was. But man, talk about a guy that influenced everything. I learned C back in high school from the K&R book.

I learned the language in the university. Long, long time ago. The graduation work was typed on one of first XT's to show up in that corner of the world. The world kept spinning like mad, the technology went where no one dreamed it can... but one thing never went away, the good, old, trusty C. And tomorrow, immediately after I check my e-mail, the first thing that I will lay my eyes on will be a page full of curly braces. The basic tool of my profession, a gift long forgotten.
Rest in peace, Mr. Ritchie. |
