Not all of them. Tanith Lee and Lawrence Watt-Evans, at least, are still living authors who're much too young to have any works PD even under those quirky US public domain rules.
The anthologies and the pulp fiction reprints are done by Wildside Press, which specializes in doing both original/reprint sf/fantasy/mystery from established authors as well as cleaned-up versions of PD stuff. |

What exactly is the problem with COPIA? I've never heard of them. Is it worth registering to get these books?

The main problem is that one batch of three freebies this summer simply would not download, no matter what, and after an initial response from Copia that they were working on it, no one ever heard from them again. So that soured people on it. But then someone posted an alternative way to get the books going through the "settings" tab. I would hesitate to buy books from Copia because of the downloading problem and the lack of customer service (plus the books are available elsewhere anyway); I haven't used any of the social features; but I like the free books! I appreciate that Copia has not shared my e-mail address with anyone else--I know this because I used an alternative address strictly for Copia, and that address has not received mail from any other entity. |
