I love my DXG and, after +12 months with one, I don't think I could ever go back to a smaller 6" e-book reader. My wife has a K3, loves it, but I cannot stand it. The extra $190 I spent on it compared to a K3 was well worth it imho. The few pdf's (sometimes just a few pages) that don't play well with it (and often do not play well on my 15" PC monitor either), I just print out.
My guess is that there will be a new DXG wifi/3G touch introduced in the near future (within ~12 months) for ~$289. Amazon is already setup to produce lots of 9.7" pearl e-ink screens so I doubt that they will totally abandon it. Cheers, Tom |

Nope, there's only the 6 inch - so if a larger screen is a must have it's out of the question. I, however, just ordered one after weeks of deliberation concerning which reader I should upgrade to from my kindle 3 - and went for the sony because of the PDF capabilities. most of the reviews I've seen so far say that it's probably he best ereader to date for reading and handling PDFs, irrespective of size. (but of course I hope for a reader that can do the same things but with bigger screen)

1. Update the PDF software to match that on the K3 and K4. It has already been proved feasible by the user community. There are a lot of super frustrated people out there that want to read PDFs on a large Eink screen. Pocketbook and Onyx seem unable to get it together enough to make a decent one. So even though the PDF software on the K3/K4 is still quite lacking, it would be quite bearable on a large screen. 2. Release a wifi model at a $50 lower price. The DX cellular radio is on a standard plug in module that can be replaced by a standard plug in wifi module. No new DX motherboard required. 3. Sell a special offers version for another $40 or $50 off. These would make PDF bearable on the DX and get the price well below $300. The resulting increased volume should allow the price to drop further and justify further development of much needed improvements. If they are waiting for increased sales of the as is DX, it will never happen. |

The problem is amazon is not a hardware company; they sell content. So amazon doesn't care about PDF because it doesn't make money on it.
They do have that format of theirs which is a drm wrapper around PDF, so maybe we'll get a better PDF device eventually but for now it doesn't seem like a priority. At any rate, the existing DX is a dead end pretty much. Mind you, I would love to have a dx myself, but it's too expensive. Prices on eBay have not budged. |

They may be unwilling to promote it more (or even update it for that matter) because DX probably targets the market which is not very eager to buy Amazon's content, which doesn't exactly fit into Amazon's business model.
Like, if you want to read reflowable content, 6" is just fine. If you're getting DX, you're probably someone who needs to read a lot of pdf's. And pdf's are in 90% cases not bought from Amazon, but downloaded from you institions' library/JSTOR/company website - name your own resource of pdf. Now, that type of customers are definitely not the ones Amazon is looking for.. so, no, I don't get my hopes high. |

Maybe just me but +90% of my reading is non-pdf on my DXG. I just love to read amazon books on this thing because it feels/looks more like reading a hardcover book rather than a little dime-store paperback, lol!

I completely agree. I do both PDF and mobi reading on my kindle DXG. It is great to increase the font and not change the page in every sentence. I carry it to my work too and i don't think it is heavy for outdoor usage. As someone said in this thread before there is no returning back to 6 inch after you see the 9.7 inch pearl. At least for me.

the whole idea behind DX was for amazon to get a foothold in the academic text book market and make bucket loads selling technical books and manuals. unfortunately the students gave the device a big thumbs down. in many ways amazon has let down its customers by failing to support the device…it's almost like they've taken the metaphorical huff with DX owners and have now left them and their expensive devices out in the cold. |
