I bought mine off ebay with the promiss that it was brand new and it was in the original package and unopened. I saved only 30$. But 30$ bucks is 30$ bucks.

While I was looking for that perfect purchase on ebay, I saw people bidding on a used broken kindle3 (3g-wifi) that could not go back. the back button was busted and they could not register it as it was a warranty swap out that the person was told to keep but would never be able to register it on the kindle site (so sideloads only)...

The bid was at 150! I couldn't believe it... this was back in Feb or Apr.

That doesn't matter. You could register it and use it and then have someone report it stolen or lost and have it bricked.

Short version: I would not buy a used Kindle unless I knew and trusted the seller.

Long version:

This was a popular scam on Craig's List for a while. People woud buy a used Kindle, register it while standing there with the seller, and go home. The next day the Kindle would be bricked. They would call Amazon and be told that the Kindle had been reported lost or stolen.

For a while, Amazon was offering to send a box for a bricked Kindle and then would try and reunite the Kindle. I have a feeling that they stopped doing this because the same Kindles were being sold, bricked, returned and rinse and repeat.

I know that my Mom's Kindle was lost for a few weeks before I noticed. I called her when I checked my Amazon account and her Kindle was no longer listed. Once I knew it was missing, I called and had it bricked. I am guessing that she either lost it or it was stolen at the airport. Someone else was using it, they had deregistered it, and I was able to have it bricked.
