Upgrade: faster processor, smaller, lighter in weight. Downgrade: A third of the storage space, half the battery life, lack of keyboard (if you're a keyboard fan). |

The only thing I find a bummer from the above is the lesser battery life. It still would hold enough books at one time for my needs. More than.

Yup I'm going to give my new Kindle the honest battery test. I'll be using it just as often as my K3 and see how long it actually lasts for me before I get the "recharge" message.

if i was you i'd keep your $79 and your perfectly good K3 and wait for something more substantive from amazon.
apart from a smaller form factor are you seriously prepared to pay $80 for the privilege of having half the battery performance, half the storage space and text entry that's worse than a mobile phone? |

Here is an idea for consideration of all forum Kindlers on the upgrade of your existing Kindle:
Ever since I started in Information Technology(IT, a fancy way of saying computers), I have always upgraded on a four year cycle. That goes for my desktop in my basement, my laptop, that is running about the house and will most likely go for my Kindle as well. The desktop is probably half way through its life cycle, the laptop is almost new and I have had the Kindle for four months. I will most likely put the Kindle on the same upgrade cycle as the rest of the IT. I have found over the years that every four years tends to be a pretty good replacement cycle for IT hardware as the changes in the software over those four years tends to bogg things down in older hardware. Four year old hardware does not seem to be able to keep up with modern software so I replace the hardware to get: bigger hard drive and more memory. If I had an original Kindle, aka Kindle 1, I would probably replace the Kindle with modern technology and would probably make a gift of the older one to the county schools. In two years I will most likely do the same thing with the desktop in the basement when I replace it, will give it to the county schools so that the Kids can learn to work with IT. If I had a Kindle 1, I would also give it to the county schools as well. I personally recommend a four year upgrade cycle, I have found that it works well over the years that I have been in IT. |

I have the Kindle Keyboard, but I'm upgrading to the Kindle Touch. I like the smaller form factor, the hardware is upgraded, some of the new "os" features should be cool.
I think there needs to be a distinction between the Kindle "4" & Kindle touch. Hardware is quite different on each. Anyway, that's me & what I'm doing. Not getting a Kindle Fire, though I want one!!!!! I already have 3 iPads! Lol. |

In the end it's up to each individual person to determine if "it's worth upgrading" their current Kindle for another model. In my case I definitely see it as an upgrade, other people might be happy with their K3 and not view the new models as an upgrade. To each his own, that's the beauty of the different model lines right now.

k3 vs k4 touch is a totally different proposition....this is clearly a different product with a new user interface.
swapping your superior k3 for a non-touch k4, on the other hand, is idiotic. how can you justify throwing away money for something that's cheaper and less functional? this device is clearly aimed at new adopters. |

Yup, I'm upgrading from the K3 to the non-touch K4. While that may be perceived as "idiotic" by some, it makes perfect sense to me.
I love the new streamlined design, the lighter weight, and the smaller form factor. I had preordered the Touch, but I don't want to touch the screen every time I want to turn the page. Maybe I'll change my mind once I have the chance to go hands-on with one. The only time I have ever used the keyboard on my K3 was to enter my wifi password. Even though it has less storage, I can guarantee that I will never have the need to store over 1,000 books on my e-reader. I have also never used the audio features on my K3. The bottom line is that I am losing features for which I never had a need, and gaining a better design and more convenient form factor. To each his own. |
