Can the indexing feature be turned off (w/o a hack)? I thought I read recently that it could, but now I can't find the reference. Thanks

I think there was a way to do it with the whole ;debugOn thing. Don't quote me on it. But I forget what the exact ~command was. That would only work until the next restart, and then you'd have to do it again, but it wouldn't involve a "hack."

If you only add your books a few at a time, though, indexing really shouldn't be a problem. When I download books to my Kindle, I just leave it plugged in for a few minutes extra to do the indexing. For novels, it seems to get through about one a minute, so it's not too bad.

The other thing to remember is that battery life is really about page views. Every time you change the page you use up some of the battery. Many pdf's don't fit on a single screen. This leaves you zooming in/out and going left/right up/down just to see one page. Each one of these changes hits the battery.

When I'm searching for something I also turn the page a lot while I skim the text. This also hits battery life.

And finally, don't forget about the book light if you have one.

In summary, battery life gets killed by:
- indexing when you first load a mess of books (is that like a gaggle of geese?)
- wifi on
- Many page turns/refreshes
- Book light if its power comes from the Kindle

My battery life is much shorter than others here. However, I never have problems getting through a day or two. I just charge it every night like I do with my Cell Phone and my Ipad. This is overkill, for a Kindle but its my routine.

Mine lasts normally 3-4 weeks WIFI off (except for downloading books). But on holiday I can barely manage a week (averaging a book/day). Next time I'll bring the charger (scary stuff watching the battery run down and not being able to read/charge )

(I'm referring to the disparity between real usage and advertising) or is it just my kindle?

I generally keep the WiFi off. Don't read THAT much. It's generally just lying around when I'm at school. So why such pathetic battery life?

I've only JB'd it and used an SS hack (set to randomize) .Is that what's causing it? (Though I doubt it..)

Thanks
you should charge it about 3 hour.
you shouldn't stop charging when you see the green light of kindle
and you should charge it after the kindle close because of low battery
