Thanks for the feedback everyone. Great advice. I'll do shared account and gift-card allowance. I'm excited for them!!! I'll set it up and have them start adding some books to their wish list.

Couldn't agree more. I joined this forum for this very reason - wanting to find out how to add my children to the kindle family. Seems somewhat absurd that Amazon does not have this setup more seamless (parental controls, etc).

They could make some type of Family Program - allowing the parent to control all content. Simple radio buttons next to each book/movie,etc. Either choose 'all' or select each individually:

* ALL

* K3 dad
* K3 mom
* KFIRE brat1
* KFIRE brat2

Each family member gets there own 'last page read' marker on same book, etc. Seems this would be simple enough.

Turning whispersync off does basically that.

I downloaded two samples from Amazon the other day without a credit card. I had revoked the CC months ago. As an additional test, I tried to buy a book. It said it could not complete and prompted for a payment method.

I set up an acount for my daughter (13) with an Amazon gift card. She has a debit card, so I told her she could add to that anytime. I just don't think she needs to be looking at the stuff I am reading - although as a 13 year old, it would probably be right up her alley!

Ah, but there's the rub. Amazon content is non-transferrable and is tied to your account. Any and all activity on that account is for you only. The closest I could think up of for kindle parental controlsis to setup a wishlist on the child's account and buy those you approve with

As far as I have seen, the kindle is for individual convienience, not for sharing in a familly. At least not yet. But someday!

I too have a Kindle Fire on order for my daughter (she can't wait) and have been contemplating this same question. I see a significant downside to registering under a separate Amazon account, namely the Prime membership. Isn't the Prime membership tied to one Amazon account and not shareable among different accounts? The File is going to allow Prime movie and tv show viewing. I don't want to have to purchase a separate membership just to allow my daughter to use it. Thoughts?

You can share with family members:

LINK

ETA I should clarify. The Prime membership can be shared for shopping/shipping purchasing etc. You can NOT share the Prime instant videos...

I still think children need their own account even if you are the only one who manages/accesses it. Assuming Amazon is still around when they become young adults, I think that they will outgrow your account and need their own anyway. At that point how do you sort out and transfer content...

The Fire and video cloud the issue some for prime members though.

The Apple products allow for association of more than one "account". Something I discovered while transitioning to os5 the cloud and all that. I wonder if the Fire may allow something like that.

OK - but instant watch video would be one of the primary reasons for sharing an account.
While I can see the reasons for putting the kids on a separate account - this is a significant downside that may outweigh the benefits of putting them on a separate account.

Valid point. Each new account gets 3 months of free Prime membership. This would give you a chance to see how much content is being consumed. Perhaps it'll be enough to warrant purchasing another membership. If so, you can think of it as a $7/month fee like Netflix. The difference being paid up front obviously. Just a thought. I don't know how old the child is. Maybe part of her allowance could be allocated for video content.

I don't see what the problem is with having the extra kindles on your account, unless you've already got to the limit. It's still your account and you don't have to give them access to it. You control the account and choose which books to download to their kindles.

It's not necessarily a problem. Depends what your wants are. Book recommendations show up across devices. I want my children to have recommendations solely geared to their unique interests. And I don't want to see recommendations for content that would be of interest to children.

Are wish lists device specific or is it just one wish list for the account?

After the personal documents cloud being introduced It's necessary to let kids have their own accounts or they will have access to your books unless you don't let them use that feature at all.

You can have as many Wishlists as you want.
I have 7 at the moment.

not sure I agree. Pros and cons to each. Having to pay for multiple prime accounts just to allow access to prime video is a big con to me. Before long my younger daughter will be asking for her own and that would then make two additional prime accounts. It comes down to whether you'd bet on Amazon adding parental features or allowing shared accounts to access Prime Instant first. I'd bet on the former, especially when considering that video to handhelds is new to Amazon and parental is going to become a must. On top of this plus you have the added advantage of book sharing across the account. I realize there are cons as well but I think the pros of same account outweigh the cons of same account at this time and my bet is that this would become more so in the future.

I just want to clarify what I'm doing. Both children will be sharing an account. I'm not having a separate account for each child. They're ages 9 and 11 so they're close enough in age to share content and have similar interests because of the age. Each child will contribute $3 of monthly allowance.
