Ha ha! It is if you have an 11 year old who saved his pocket money for months and decided to buy a reader with it!

Anyway, I'm home sick today so my fuse is shorter than normal. Think I need to move away from the PC and have a sleep. Good luck with your reader.

I wouldn't be here if I was reading an ebook! If its not running by tomorrow I'm taking it back and waiting for the Sony or pick up a Kindle. Sort of like buying a brand new Toyota Corolla, turning the key, starter motor engages but they forgot to put the motor in at the factory! Get better soon, go and read a book kiwipippa.

The damage to their reputation will be huge - and they will never win those people back. They'll buy the new kindle ($100 cheaper, even if it doesn't have wifi), or the new Sony - $50 cheaper and very similar - if not better - features.

Please kobo - pull the product from New Zealand shelves until this is sorted. Those of us who read these forums know what they're doing and now we understand what's going on. What about all the people who have walked in, paid $279(!!!!) and bought what to them at the moment is a lovely paperweight?

This is absolutely dire. I'm in Australia and very happy with my (imported from the US) KT. It was supposed to become available in Australia in September, which has been put off until mid October supposedly, but at this stage Collins still has nothing on its website about KT. I was told when I enquired that they were still negotiating with Kobo on price.

My husband, who was going to get one, has now pre-ordered a Sony Touch, and I think a number of other people will too.

And then there's the wide availability of Kindles in various shops here. It really looks as if Kobo has missed the boat, which is a shame.

In a competitive market where everyone tries to break inter international market? Something like this might as well be nuclear meltdown for kobo as a company.

And what does this say about Whitcoulls? Surely they had someone open up a Kobo and test it out before they put them on the shelves?

This is the sort of thing that can happen when you get a book seller, that is used to filling shelves with books and whacking on a big fat margin, trying to peddle sophisticated electronic goods!

Sure, the problem may not have been caused by Whitcoulls, but they have a responsibility as the retailer to at least check that the goods they're selling will work. We're not talking about a few defective units, we're talking about every Kobo Touch that Whitcoulls is selling right now!

and still not fixed.......your point about pre-testing the units is so blindingly obvious, why was it not done? I was really looking forward to my first ereader, paid premium $ and what a mess.
Yes, you raise the issue of a bookseller selling something they don't have knowledge about. Sounds right, the staff where I bought mine were very nice but totally in the dark about the kobo. In fact they tried to sell me a cover for it ($60) but I pointed out that the new touch is smaller and didn't fit it properly. "Oh well just wait till next month when we'll get some covers in".
I'm knitting a nice woolen cover for mine, putting a lead weight in it and throwing the whole damn shemozzle in the river tomorrow...

Don't do that - it would be a waste of a perfectly good cover.

On a more serious note, read my other thread on here about setup in New Zealand. There is a way that you can start reading by bypassing the kobo setup.

I have been a kobo advocate for over a year (original kobo owner plus kobo touch) but I have to say my patience is wearing thin. My son bought one on Monday from Whitcoulls - largely on my recommendation - and now this happens. Mother of the Year for me! I still haven't had a response to my help desk call either.

While at lunch I popped into the Whitcoulls store in the Glenfield Mall and a very helpful lady demoed the Kobo Touch for me. She was very enthusiastic and took great delight in showing me the Reading Life and the font settings. However I was a bit surprised that the very first thing she chose to show me was the sketch app!

No mention was made of the setup problems.

When I commented on the high price she told me to wait a while because the price was coming down to NZ$250 "in a week or so". I bet that'll please all the people that rushed out to buy one in the first week they were on sale in New Zealand!

Mdclements,

Actually, it may be better for me to factory reset before I try again as it fails half way through.

Will post results later.

No, definitely still not working. Trying to sync to an existing kobo account with about 8 books in it. The desktop gives the error message "Whoops, you are using two different accounts". We're not - it is only one account.

But something has changed. The reader now shows as being registered under the correct account under settings. And we managed to connect it to wireless. When we press sync on the reader it shows as going through an update and sync cycle but no books are downloaded.

I will try the other unit which is syncing to a brand new account on a different PC (but I can't do this until this evening as it is a present for my daughter and she will have to be in bed before I try it).

The other unit is not working either. It connects to the kobo desktop, downloads and installs new firmware, asks for account details then says "Opps, lets try that again, something unexpected happened during setup" - no sync takes place and even if you press "Try again" it still will not sync.

Knit one, purl one, knit one, purl one. Soon I will have a lovely cover to keep my Kobo touch warm, until the morning, when I shall enclose a pound of lead fishing weights and hurl all into the mighty Pacific Ocean, where it will Rest in Eternity and Barnacles shall be its only Friend. Oh I'd much rather be READING, right now, rather than knitting.....

Why don't you just skip setup altogether, stop being annoyed and start reading?

Even for firmware updates you don't need the Kobo Desktop application, updates are easily done without that wonky piece of app.
