I resemble that remark! I ordered the Fire before I looked closely at the final specs. Then I saw the announcement for the Toshiba Thrive 7, supposedly due in December and with a 1280 x 800 resolution screen, so I canceled my Fire preorder this morning.

at what price?

Definitely I'd like to have a full Android tablet, with cameras, gps, sdcard slot, etc. but all those add to the costs and (maybe cause I already have a Xoom) I'm willing to purchase the Fire just for reading around the house.

Kennyc - the price hasn't officially been announced yet, but speculation is they're going to be about $380 for the 16GB and another $100 or so for the 32GB. I'm hoping the price on the Kindle Fire will convince Toshiba to at least consider being a little more competitive price-wise. I'm willing to pay a bit more to get the better screen resolution and all the ports; I've been spoiled by the "retina" screen on my iPod Touch.

Besides, the Fire isn't any different from the Galaxy Tab I already own, at least not in any of the things that are important to me.

Well.....dude.....he just bought a macbook air and installed ubuntu on it. he thumbs his nose at my Xoom.

I did get him a Sony 505 a couple of years back....don't think he uses it much though...he is a big reader though...actually on his way to France for a AstroPhysics Conference.

I'm in that group. I'm really interested in a small tablet as a replacement for my Android phone, for reading and gaming, but I'm also interested in something the size of an iPad for light editing when I'm away from home. The Fire is a good size for everything but documents, so I'm torn between waiting for reviews and the "I want it now!" urge.

Since I already know what life is like with Android, I'm going to wait until I see what Win8 Tablet PCs™ (the real ones; wintel) look like, CPU & pricewise. If I see a decent core-based one, that'll be my next toy.

I fell into the 'gimme, gimme' camp. Not sure how well it will handle PDFs, web browsing etc. It may be yucko compared to my Xoom -- which is great for that -- but if so, I'll still use it for reading -- or will sell/replace with something else.

Not for the non touch Kindle. I ordered mine late Wednesday night and got it on Friday.

I too would prefer a single standard, but this has certainly set it further out.
