OP, thanks for posting this. I have a K3 in perfect working condition that I'll be sending. Good to know that it'll be appreciated and needed.
![]() I went to the website and it's pretty cool. They have pictures and letters from the soldiers who've received the Kindles. Last edited by voracious71; 10-01-2011 at 02:41 PM. |

I was not aware of Kindle for Troops, so thanks for mentioning that!
On a related note, over 800 authors now participate in Operation eBook Drop. They donate their ebooks to the troops through Smashwords. Here are links for more information regarding that: Operation eBook Drop Smashwords Supports Operation eBook Drop |

This is a great idea! I'm always donating to various charities that support both active military and our vets. Currently, I'm knitting helmet liners for the troops.
I know where my K2 and K3 are going once I get my K4 Touch. |

Great Info, I was in the US Navy and Did a lot of reading while I was deployed.
We worked 12 hrs on 12hrs off 7 days a week, once you get off your shift eat chow, take a shower, and write a letter home to your loved ones you would get a bit homesick. Being able to read gave you a bit of escape from it all and provided some comfort. For those who have have never been deployed you may not know how lonely it gets. I received a Christmas card while deployed from someone who I never had the honor to have met, it contained a $1 bill with Santa's Picture on it. After 25 years I still have it. It meant the world to me to know someone back home remembered us. The little things you do for them will be remembered and cherished for years. |

Especially the authors among us may be be interested in Operation E-Book Drop as well, which gives our troops something to read on those Kindles:
http://blog.smashwords.com/2009/09/s...ion-ebook.html I'm proud to say that my little music primer is in the program, and I've received some nice words of thanks from service members who've downloaded it. BTW, while I was personally never deployed, much of my Navy unit was, and I was rather surprised to find out how many basic things they didn't have easy access to and that they requested in care packages, like hygiene items . And we were a support unit 'in the rear with the gear.' I can only imagine what it's like for front-line war fighters. ApK Last edited by ApK; 10-01-2011 at 08:51 PM. |

For feck's sake, not our troops do NOT put their lives on the line so I can bitch about them in this forum... |

What do I not understand? I think it's inappropriate and, seriously, quite offending to say that soldiers risk their lives so the rest of us can have a good time...
Either there's a real reason or their isn't. But some people's tendency to defer their responsibilities to others (soldiers in this case) is just really lame. Your provocative question in the end of your previous post just shows that even more. All I said was that they could buy their own devices while others clearly can't. Even if they'd have to wait for six weeks, for others, it's out of the reach forever. I don't understand why some of you are now bitchin about me for pointing that out. This had no ideological implications whatsoever, I even apologized for my first comment and tried to break it down in a reasonable statement, I cannot do anything else. And I don't understand why some of you find that personally offending. My dad's been in the military as well and we often talk about such things and he doesn't take it personal (if I'm allowed to be a bit personal as well) but in fact shares some of this with me and inspires such thoughts. Maybe he's just intelligent enough to see behind this "risking your life" crap that only exists nowadays to make unbelievably stupid people feel special (in sort of that way "what do you have" "I have a double master in business and law" "oh, I have my life")... Coal miners and policemen and fire engineers also risk their lives but get no special treatment... |
