I think the main thing the consumer will compare is the price.

or availability.

The Sony PRS-T1 will be available in Australia before the new Kindle(s) or Kobo Touch will.

I have a Kindle Keyboard and a Sony PRS650, for me I need both as I need the Sony for PDF reflow, converting PDFs to mobi isn't always very good.

I think, in a way, by releasing 3 new models yesterday (I class the touch wifi and 3g as one model) Amazon have just made the ereader world a bit more complicated, and its not good that two of those models are only released in the US. The rest of us are getting a bit fed up of being second class customers.

I see no reason to change my readers until we get a new screen, both my Kindle and my Sony are insured for three years (the Kindle through Square Trade, the Sony through my Bank) so worst case scenario, they go wrong and get repaired or replaced with a newer model. Be interesting to see if any Kindle models get phased out next year once they work out whats selling the best.

I all-too-often end up highlighting a word or some text instead of turning a page on my Sony.

Amazon overcomes that problem: as far as I understand it, you tap the far right corner to activate a 'tool' mode; it is in this mode that one presumably then taps on a word. There is no mention of double-tapping like on the Sony. Until we see a hands-on, I guess we won't know for sure either way.

As Amazon have said that one can tap pretty much anywhere that isn't the far left of the screen to move forward a page, it would seem very short-sighted of them to have not thought about the potential problem you mention.

Sonys have become the higher end machine people move up to after a Nook or Kobo. Heavy readers discover library management is a problem when you go cheap. It is very much like people who get their first car in highschool, and then discover they need a van or stationwagon to haul their family around when they marry and start families.

Also, Sony is the best for recipe books when you are cooking chicken...

So, is calibre so much better with Sony than it is with K-Touch? I am a newbie about to buy my first reader for my wife as a gift. So far, T1-RED is winning. Thanks to posting by others, I realize that the key is the open E-Pub format and general philosophy of the companies.

Since Calibre is named after Sony Libre... (one of 4 maybe reasons.) I am thinking it is more native and easier... and that makes all the difference to me.

Not sure about the KT, but the original Kobo needed a Calibre restart for Calibre to see the Kobo connected.

Sony is recognised every time

The Sony allows easy book organization; collections, series etc. Correct me if I'm wrong but you can organize books on the Kindle by Series or Collections can you?

With a Sony ereader and books loaded via Calibre any tags you load against the book in Calibre become Collections on the Sony. So if you give a book 4 tags in Calibre, it is loaded into those 4 collections on the Sony. To move a book into another collection you need to add or remove the tag in Calibre, delete the book from your Sony and reload. You can delete a collection on the Sony and the books are not affected.

For the Kindle you can load books in the same way, via Calibre, but you then need to create the collection manually (using a keyboard) on the Kindle and then load each book into the collection on the Kindle. I think there is some software on this forum somewhere about Collections for the Kindle but I have no experience of that.

I feel I must correct you here. To move a book to a new Sony collection you do not need to delete the book from your reader. As long as you have set Calibre Preferences - Sending books to Device - Metadata management to Automatic management then you only need to reconnect your Sony to Calibre. All Collections will automatically be realigned to match Calibre.

Being that I will be a new Sony user when the T1 arrives, I appreciate tips like this!

You're welcome We'll have to keep our fingers crossed that the Calibre developers can make sure the PRS-T1 is as well integrated with Calibre as all the previous Sonys have been.

I have faith that they will do it as soon as they can get one of them in their hands. I will also be getting your plug-in. Hope that it doesn't have to be re-written much.

I took the leap and have pre-ordered my T1. I purchased the red one through newegg.com. Now the wait...
