For almost everyone, the flash is a complete non-issue. After an hour of using an eInk device your brain just "filters it out" and you stop even being consciously aware of it.

I compare the "flash" to turning the page in a printed paper book. That never bothered me or interfered with reading, and it's a lot slower.

I honestly do not notice it anymore... as others have said, it took about an hour to forget about it. |

Another question....what is a reasonable amount of time to expect for an e-reader's lifespan? Would an E-ink display hold up in the long run better than a LCD display, or vice versa? Until now I've been looking exclusively at E-ink displays, but if a LCD display doesn't cause eyestrain either and is durable I might expand my list of possible options.
(This is why I hate lots of choices, lol. I'm constantly second guessing myself.) |

I know folks who are still using K1's and they are working just fine. If you treat an e-reader the same way you treat a laptop, ie protect the screen and don't be too rough with the device, it can last a long time.
