I just searched Amazon (US) on "philosopher's stone" and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (HC from the UK, with the "adult" cover), with the US version ("Sorceror's Stone") in the 4th spot on the list.

Yvan, you might be interested in reading Suzette Haden Elgin's The Language Imperative, a non-fiction book that explains, among other things, why the quality of translations is so variable.
