I have tried to download books from free e-book sites and they always come up with pages the wrong size, with big > shapes on all sides.
This suggest that you are choosing the PDF file format when downloading from free ebook sites. PDF format tends not to display well on any e-reader. Choose EPUB format when you next download from a free site and you will find that there is a vast improvement in how the book is displayed on your reader.

I will give that a try when I am able....my Kobo is once again hung up and refuses to leave its start page. I have had to paperclip it twice today. It is one product I would never buy. Since it is a gift, I have to use it. But I think it is truly, truly a POS. Please, someone get me a Kindle for next Christmas.

Maybe I could leave this in a taxi.

Sounds like a PDF to me as well. I've gotten lots of free or cheap ebooks from non-Kobo sites and have no problems if it is an ePub file. PDF is more challenging to read.

If you can't get 'free' books to work for the Kobo, I don't think you'll find the Kindle to be any kind of improvement.

What firmware version do you have on your Kobo, and which model is it (Original or WiFi)?

It is wifi. I do not know the firmware and can't get to its specs as it is solidly and determinedly hung up.

(The only reason I mention Kindle is becasue a friend is having good luck with it. No one else I know has a kobo, just me.)

The final book format won't be very good, but should be readable, for the budget concious.
Where do you find the 'tweak epub' feature in Calibre?

You can right click on a book in the list and choose from the menu. Alternatively, you can customize the toolbar (from preferences) to add it as a button.
