I'm a little unclear about where the ASCII restriction is occurring. Most of us these days are using Unicode-based eBook formats; both Windows and Mac support Unicode characters in filenames. Is it due to the fact that reading devices are using FAT32 partitions and they only support 8-bit characters in filenames?

Currently I believe the Sony devices are the only devices where the driver will update the metadata automatically. After updating the metadata have you tried deleting the book from the device and resending the book?
No, it works fine on the Kindle, too. The updated metadata gets written automatically when you do a "Send to Device".
Nice to know, but metadata written when you do a "Send to Device" is not the same as being updated automatically. The Sony updates the metadata automatically by just connecting the reader.

Thank you for the clarification, Walt; I misunderstood what you were saying.

That's all correct, but how about _optional_ support for non-ascii characters? It would be nice to have this feature in settings.

As Kovid said in post #10, non-ascii characters in path names isn't going to happen. Or should I say, Kovid won't approve such a change, which is equivalent to "won't happen".

I have no plans to implement metadata writing for fb2, but since fb2 is a nice XML based format, it shouldn't be too hard. If someone submits a patch, I will be happy to merge it into calibre.

Can you tell me what parts of source code must be modified for fb2 metadata writing? I mean, in what files should i add it?
