Please check out GALAXY OF HEROES II: War Heroes.
I wrote it during a yearlong deployment to Iraq with the U.S. Army, which gave me plenty of material to work with. You're going to love it! Last edited by Gus Flory; 12-05-2011 at 01:25 PM. |

Just Finished "Galaxy of Heros" Part 1
Don't know if it was a mistake, but both were free, so I snagged both. I just started book 2. So I thought I'd do a mini review of the first book. (Don't worry, it's pretty positive! if it wasn't that good, I'd just keep quiet.)
It starts out with the feel of a sort of kitschy space opera, and I wasn't sure if I'd like it. But Gus Flory quickly starts tossing in some unusual ideas worthy of consideration that made it quite enjoyable to me. The premise is that the Human race is so far behind the rest of the Galaxy's inhabitants, that they don't stand a chance technologically or culturally. Earth gets conquered by the biggest loser race out there, and the Humans are now pegged as Patsy's and fair game for everyone since they lost to THOSE morons. I'd like to see this relationship explored a bit. A group of humans not on earth, manage to flee the solar system and start to rebuild human civilization elsewhere and this seems pretty successful for several generations, but eventually the universe finds the Humans and tries to exploit them causing them to flee after a brief war that humans had no chance of winning. So humans are now sort of galactic gypsies. Persecuted and exploited wherever they manage to light, they are forced to resort to whatever survival schemes seem reasonable to keep body and soul together. In the course of this back story, humanity has come to the attention of a war like race with a policy of conquest and decimation. It isn't clear why they want to go after the humans before all others, even before those other races they are at war with. I'm hoping that will come out in later books. If it doesn't, I will be really disappointed, it's kind of illogical to be going after humanity when other races/cultures are much more competitive and capable of effective resistance and are already at war with them anyway. These aren't just generic bad guys, they aren't all that different from us, except for being much larger and some minor cosmetic differences, they pretty much look like us. I keep thinking there is more to their story that hasn't been revealed yet. I hope there is! The conflict in the story is pretty much driven by the background I've just presented and I won't say too much more about the plot to avoid ruining the story for others. The characters are pretty interesting with some interesting twists. My favorite is the cyborg, Genie. An unusual twist on the story of a robot trying to lean how to be human. A mechanical female body that is controlled by a human female nervous system, she KNOWS how to be a real woman, but her programming constantly prevents her from following her natural inclinations, and she resents it. Of course she is beautiful and designed to be instantly desired by all human men, but she finds it to be a total PITA. Her love/hate relationship with her current. . .'owner?', is totally one sided. He is totally oblivious to the conflicts going on in her soul (no question she has one). She gains free will within the first book and chooses to stay with her former owner, who at one point is seriously injured in combat. She fixes him up but admits to others she made some 'improvements' in her man (mostly unexplained, so far). In my experience there are few women who wouldn't make a few changes in their men if they could. (yeah, men too, but lets face it for guys it would be mostly bigger breasts and longer legs.). I'm looking forward to finding out what hidden changes she has made. I'm a bit less impressed with the 2 main male human characters. They are really the same character with pretty much the same Han Solo type personality. In fairness, the back story pretty much requires this sort of cheeky self confidence in men for survival. BUT, Gus has set the stage for some growth in them that might prove interesting. I've already decided to buy the third book if there is one (there has to be, wrapping up this story in a single second volume would be a serious shame), and the fourth as well. At the very least, this universe is worth exploring in other unrelated books. It's been a good read with some interesting ideas. Worth looking into I think. |
