Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I've been asking for (and getting) some help on plugboards which got me wondering if maybe the solution to the OP's problem would be to write a plugboard that maps Calibre's author_sort field to the Kindle's author field.

As I've gone to great lengths to make clear in many of my posts, my own grasp of regex and its behavior is quite non-existent, so I'm really appealing to (as usual) the more knowledgeable forum members to confirm or deny this hypothesis.
