OK so it's forked. That forked OS is tied to Amazon's App store, which also sells apps to nearly any Android device. Also the OS has lots of blue and yellow coloring. Maybe it's locked down like fort knox. I dunno. I've got no problem with the speculation. That's part of the fun, here. I just wouldn't say we "know" much of anything. Nah, the one I read was a lot more hands-on, but look at Ana being lazy and not googling it. Sorry.
![]() The thing is, as a Google Market user, I've sunk at least $50 into android apps. I don't want to rebuy them on the Amazon Market anymore than I wanted to rebuy them on the Nook Market. ![]() So forked is an issue for anyone who has already invested in Google Market and doesn't want to rebuy everything. ![]() If you haven't already invested in Google Market, it's probably great. ![]() |

![]() I can see not wanting to reinvest in those apps again. That's a solid concern. Maybe (I says maybe) it will just be Amazon Appstore inclined, rather than limited; like the Appstore will have more slick integration, but it won't prevent you from going to the Android market site and downloading the app. There are tabs out there that come with only the Amazon Appstore installed, not Google, but they're aren't shut out of it (iirc). |

As long as it runs everything in the Amazon App store I will more than likely get this new tablet. I've been looking at the Color Nook a lot but own a Kindle. I love my Kindle and can only hope a color tablet will be great as well. I'm waiting to actually see it. I'm sure at some point the Amazon tablet will get hacked. I want to see if it has an SD slot or not

I don't think there are 2 million people who know what closed, forked, true Android, etc. mean. Heck, I'm pretty technical, I follow this site pretty religiously, and I can barely understand what those things mean.

I'm in the market for a 7" tablet and was interested in Amazon's upcoming tablet (even though I'm not an Amazon fangirl.) If it's a closed system that pretty much ties you to the store, however, then I'll have to look elsewhere. Access to the Android app market is important to me.

The only article about the looming Amazon tablet that mentions a hands-on look was using an Amazon internal PROTOTYPE. I don't believe anyone has had access to the production version nor would they be privy to pricing or market app access. Amazon won't be so silly as to produce an iPad (or iPod) like environment needing only proprietary software to use the device or control content. The target market are people who eschew Apple products for just that scenario so how would putting out such a device not push those potential or even existing customers pretty much to any other device? People like me who are just waiting to see if there is a good deal here but must have total freedom on how we use the thing we paid for, as in bought not leased. If it doesn't have this then other options will get our cash and cause us to recommend anything but Apple or Amazon to our friends.

Amazon isn't really interested in leading some kind of crusade against Apple on behalf of Android fans. Amazon is there to make money, period. The Kindle is even more closed and proprietary than the iPad. I expect that the Ktab to be no more open than the iPad, and indeed would be not surprised if it were less open. |

Same here. I only buy the free ones. I have over 500 apps for my iPod touch and hundreds for my Nook Color. I've been collecting Amazon's free app of the day ever since they started it back in March. I have apps that'll never work on my Nook because it lacks a mic, camera, compass, and GPS. Who knows what future Android devices I may get that can use these apps.
Free apps means I can switch platforms and never suffer a monetary loss. |

I think this is just a bubble marketting form. Blow a big bubble by yourself and then let it blow on tablet release.
Who is really going to buy a tablet which restricts usability as compared to other honeycomb tabs? They CAN'T close kindle app on other tablets to support the Amazon-tablet-only market, they will lose customers. What's the new thing in buying it? Does it have Pixel Qi or similar display? Does it have some sort of amazing battery life like 7 days running screen on? No. |
