True.. but a quick look at a sister forum here indicates that it is common for the major competitor top replace units, including broken screens, at no cost, during the entire warranty period... As I said earlier, I loved the features on the PRS- line, so that also leads to a lot of my disappointment This unit, everything was fine.. screen stand by image was flawless, pick it up, turn it on, gently tap the book cover to open the book I want to read (battery had totally died, so charged completely), and I watch as the screen flickers than the obvious signs of a broken substrate. I have never had ANY problem with any other touch screen device, including multiple PDAs, phones, and an android tablet. I also do not like being called a liar by someone who is supposed to be providing customer service....

Why dont you look into the pocketbook ereaders?? They use the vizplex and they have way more features than any other ereader. Yeah the resolution isnt as great as the pearl. But truthfully how much resolution do you really need for Black and white text???

I am thinking of going to a TFT based reader... or trying to find better software for my android tablet... Aldiko seems to be painfully slow importing the books to its database, but I love the interface... like the reading experience on Coolreader, but not the lack of a "book shelf" interface or even a "library" so to speak

Neither unit has any damage to the outside, and the second one literally died in my hands as I turned it on to read. Thanks for the ride, I can now see that some of the users here are as rude as the support staff I had to deal with... just one things to think about, if you do a minimal amount of research, you will find that Sony has thousands of complaints about refusing to honor warranty service and always blames the consumer....

The last two devices that he had in which the screens broke for no apparent reason, with no surface damage, were a cell phone and a TFT based ereader. Good Luck with your future devices. |

thank you for your input. I might add these are the only devices I've ever had where the screens broke.... including 5 PDAS (kept upgrading when new ones came out or batteries finally refused to charge anymore), 4 phones (upgrades, and a replacement for a stolen unit), android tablet.
So, the only 2 units that have issues are SONY... none of the HANDSPRING, PALM, LG, SAMSUNG or even generic units do... hmm... SONY claims they listen, but it appears they don't.... next unit I buy, I will buy an extended warranty, even though they are usually rip offs.. because it may close their only loop hole and they can't blame accidental damage, since that is suddenly covered. (I repeat, however, that there was no accidental damage). |

You might consider trying out SquareTrade for your next warranty coverage, they also offer accidental damage at usually a significant savings over getting it through the store. I compared the same protection from Best Buy (where I bought my 350), Sony and SquareTrade, and got a 3 year warranty including accidental damage with SquareTrade for $39.99 total for the 3 years. If I remember, both Best Buy and Sony wanted $79.99 for the same coverage for 2 years. You can often find promotional discounts going on that will give you a percentage off the usual charge (which is what I did).
I normally never purchase extended warranties, but after reading about the number of screens being damaged, and some just seeming to go bad without any explanation, I decided to do it for the reader since I carry it with me everywhere. |

As I understand it, there are screens made by different manufacturers using the same e-ink FILM applied to their screens, i.e. the "bad batch" by LG that had the fading in the sun issue... If I am mistaken in this, please forgive me.
