If it were simple things, such as colour vs color, it wouldn't be too difficult. But it becomes more complex when you think about those words that have a different meaning.

I used to be perplexed by the differing treatment of groups/teams.
US: The team is ...
UK: The team are ...

I thought my UK counterpart at work had a problem with subject/verb agreement until I looked it up and realized the rules were different.

Before I knew better, it was much more cringe-worthy than spelling differences.

Not to mention the different definitions of words. An American would be perplexed at how you opened your boot or bonnet. And then there's football. In the US it's shaped like an egg and carried.

True. Like "He felt a faucet on his shoulder, and turned ...". Goodness knows what such software would make of someone wearing a fanny pack. A bad idea

I read a US edition of book by a British author that had a "Lift" and "Elevator" in the same book .
British car terms do not cause problems, My first car was a Austin-Heally (frog-eye) Sprite. The toolkit in the boot gathered no dust

In my opinion, maybe all books everywhere should be published with the spelling chosen by the author and no liberties should be taken by the publishers to alter the spelling.
I wonder, have you ever tried reading anything written in the "good old days" when spelling (or grammar come to that) was not codified at all , and you spelt/wrote as you thought ?

While amusing for a while, it is sometimes incomprehensible.

And pity the poor teachers !

I've read lots of it. It slows one down but can still be followed.

I've been reading Quadrophenia, and it's a mix of both English and American. Colour is spelt right, but a lot of the words have a letter Z in them instead of an S.

No, no... over-free use of antibiotics and everyone's scepticism risks becoming drug resistant and INCURABLE! Bad idea...
