Okay, my last post. The part everyone is missing here is the abysmal treatment the writers are being subjected to by a prominant New York Publisher. I totally understand discounts and freebie to give exposure to a writer but you seem to be missing the points that A) The publisher is under contract to ask/inform me of these things, and B) Even if you love the book, recommend it to 10 million friends and every one of you buy every single copy of my books, the publisher is screwing me and NOT paying.

I am taking this to the legal arena and I am trying to put a stop to this publisher making money off of my books. I just can't understand how none of you seem to understand the situation here. I give away copies of my books all the time and I will continue to do that, but when Dorchester is doing it behind my back with the sole purpose of increasing sales of my other books that they aren't going to pay me for, it's illegal. Seriously, wouldn't you try put a stop to that?

I've already said I don't blame you guys for this but I refuse to get dragged into a meaningless argument. If some of you read my work, terrific, I hope you enjoy it. I just hope you writers or aspiring writer at some point put a little thought into writer's rights. This kind of thing happens all the time. It's not your fault, it's not mine, it's not amazon's, it's not this site's fault, it it the publisher yet again taking advantage of a writer simply because they can.

If you'd like to read some of my work that the authors are actually getting paid for, please check these two links out:

All my very best.

He still doesn't get it, just look at his examples.

He sold the rights to DP and no doubt the contract he signed gave them the rights to set prices, give away promotional copies, etc (and he stayed thru the earlier issues, which pretty much means he consented to the 'new' contracts). If he doesn't like what they can do, there are legal avenues for him to pursue (but, until then, what DP is doing is no doubt entirely legal; if not, he has more cause for action, but against them, not anyone else).

So, DP started and advertising campaign and gave away copies of some books as a promotion - he happened to be in it. Rather than being overjoyed that his books rose from obscurity to higher in the sales ranks (which means someone might stumble upon them and purchase them, now that they are back to higher price), he blasts forums and calls those who took advantage of the promotion thieves and likens them to pirates and burglars (and DP to a vindictive, thieving neighbor ... which they may be, but the neighbor in the example doesn't have a contract that allow disposition of good; they would be closer to the auctioneer of the estate that gives away a bit to get people to come to the auction).

All in all, though, he's done a good job alienating potential readers here (and no doubt elsewhere).

You're right: He doesn't get it.

What he does get (in my opinion) is his contention to the whole argument about Dorchester - BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT HE POSTED IN HIS INITIAL POST.

I would have felt absolutely no guilt whatsoever about downloading this book WHEN AMAZON OFFERED IT FOR FREE. In my opinion, he conflated two issues, using the Dorchester Issue to construct an argument about the members of MobileRead.

He's being cheated of money from Dorchester, but not by the members of MobileRead. We simply downloaded a free offering from Amazon. (In my case I missed the window of opportunity but, in hindsight, I'm glad that it is now "correctly" priced.)

I wish the author success in his efforts to recoup his lost income. His attitude toward the well-meaning members of MobileRead, I will not miss.

Apparently, readers are supposed to do extensive research before downloading a book offered for free anywhere but the author's own site to determine if the author is a willing participant. Perhaps email the author (if you can find their email address) and ask their permission to download their book posted for free on say Amazon?

You said we were stealing the book, just because Amazon was offering it for free. Sorry you are so bent out of shape.

I've picked up additional books from new authors this way because I picked up the freebie.

I just checked Amazon, and it is not free now. So, I won't be reading your book (or stealing it), and won't be reading any other books you may have out that I would have paid for because perhaps I just loved your "freebie", and shared my love for your book for others to see on Amazon. That's how I found books by Terry Spear, and ended up spending money on the whole series of her werewolf books.

Good luck dude!
