The price of the device is probably justified. What isn't justified is its existence.

thats my point. the component prices, development, production and support costs are the same but people expect them to be less at retail.

people think in terms of "small , medium, large" and expect the small to be greatly cheaper for electronics like this but the reality is they all cost about the same to make

I don't think people expect lower prices for compact devices, they have seen prices of smartphone without contract. But the case here is funny. Does HTC really expect to sell it to market when most of the android tablets are priced at sub $500 level.

many people do . i have seen written remarks and heard people saying things like "how can that tablet be 500 when a phone is free." or " its basically a giant phone with out the phone function why does it cost so much?" and when you point out the real price of the phone unsubsidized they are shocked that anyone would price a phone so high.

this is why the whole tablet market makes no sense. they cant build them any cheaper than laptops but people expect them to be cheaper because there is no keyboard and they have mobile OSs ( as if a mobile os costs any less to creat and support than a "full OS")
Well, in case of android, isn't the cost of r&d largely born by google?

$699 with contract is insane. Or may just be brilliant. They're not serious about competing in this space for now, but they need to put something out to throw their hat in the ring and gain experience. And what better way to differentiate themselves than by pricing it way high? They avoid looking like yet another android tablet or not being as good as the iPad so they have to compete on price.

Please don't anyone buy this thing so I can get it for $99 in couple of months.
