Kindle for PC 1.7.1 - Page 2

the two books that were on my computer in 1.6.0 are still readable on 1.7.1.

It only seems to work when I disable the auto update. Now I see the popup message. I've never seen it update on it's own. I wonder if it's because of Windows 7.

....and if you say 'yes' to downloading it, it also installs it rather than allowing you to just download it (so i have no copy to fall back on in the future). so now i gotta' go download it again so i have that archive.

Why do you need to archive it?

so if the need arises, or i simply want to, i can uninstall the current installed version and re-install the specific archived version that i want to use.

And to install it on other computers in the house. But like Alan, mostly to keep multiple versions available. (I still run 1.4.1 on my main laptop and my desktop.)

One thing I noticed about 1.7.1 it seems to regenerate thumbnails or go on some check on every launch then crash sometimes. I think I'm going back to 1.7.0. I have over 900 books on my archive.

and it can't handle it.

Ugh 1.7.1 when uninstalled deregistered me.
Ha! It auto updated me to 1.7.1 again. so I uninstall this time having it take to deregister page and then installed 1.7.0 turn off auto update and now it works.

I didn't have to redownload my books!

1.7.0 defiantly does not do that check 1.7.1 does that eventually crashes.

Hmmm. OTOH, maybe I'll just stick with 1.4.1. It works, it doesn't crash, and I only use it for sucking down books to my computer for pulling into Calibre anyway, so don't give a hoot about features.

I would suggest staying with 1.4.1 if that is all you use it for. I tried going back 1.4.1 but before I could turn off auto update, it had updated me to 1.7.1.

I then installed 1.7.0. and it did the same thing.

I finally got 1.7.0 to stick and told it to skip 1.7.1. So far so good.

Thanks for that heads up. I downloaded 1.7.1 but I think I'll just keep 1.7.0.

I wanted it for PDF support but everytime I opened it it had to check every book in archive and downloaded.

Sometimes it crashed and then I also noticed when it downloaded new books they wouldn't show up till I restarted the program. 1.7.1 has some bugs. So it's good to wait.

1.7.1 is unusable for me.

I've got 500 documents in "My Kindle Content" folder including items from Kindle Store and converted .mobi and K4PC crashes within 1-2 minutes since lanuch. I also have to downgrade to 1.4.

Works fine for me, but I only have one book in it (the one I'm reading) at a time.

I understanding keeping local copies for safeguarding, but they don't all have to be kept in the "My Kindle Content" folder at once do they? If you remove DRM you don't have to keep them in that folder at all. And even if you don't remove DRM, those local copies will only be good as long as that computer's hard-drive is around (and only good for that particular instance of K4PC).

I guess I just don't understand keeping 500-1000 ebooks in Kindle for PC's local folder unless you use your PC to do all of your reading on.

Enlighten me.

Even if it's simply; "I just like having them all there to look at."
