Every time I've bought an ebook (or similar type of non-item) it has taken me to a download page after paying. It's never said now go and check your emails for a download link.

Personally I just direct everyone to Smashwords, B&N, or Amazon. I have run my own store on my site, and have done the Paypal buttons, but in the end i found it simpler to just let people buy from people they already know and trust. That way refunds, mistakes in billing, and etc are not my problem nor do they hurt my name with the buyer. That way I can be a author, and other people can be a store. I do not need to be both.

VydorScope, yeah, I'm pretty much leaning that way myself. I simply like the idea of selling from my site because I get the whole $2.99 from the book sale vs 99c. But as of this point I'm really thinking that your idea may be best as there's no really good solution for digital downloads that I've found.
