I hear you I had a hard time with that GPS issues since Maps and Gas Buddy are my number one apps. I eventually had to update the ROM which fixed those problem and a lot more stability issues.

I also want to stay away from Samsung but their hardware is so good. The flip side is the community support is excellent for their hardware it makes it easy to forget Samsung doesn't support their products since work arounds are easily found.

Nice, I'll have to check out the ROMS on Android forum. My GPS went from taking 10-15 minutes to connect, to taking 30 minutes, or not at all, and I have a strong Verizon signal in my area. I bought the phone though because it has an awesome screen.

I agree, HTC or Motorola, especially now that Google owns them, maybe we'll get more vanilla android devices. Their screens just aren't as pretty.

I bought a Galaxy SII a couple of weeks ago with no particular expectation that it would be any good for reading. But I haven't switched on my Kindle 3 since!

The display on the SII is amazing. Even though it's backlit LCD and smaller than the Kindle (less on the page), it is still very comfortable for (indoor) reading. I've tried reading ebooks on phones before but this is the first one I feel comfortable with. The next time I go travelling, the Kindle stays at home!

All my books are Mobi/Kindle and I'm using Kindle for Android.

I was intrigued by that comment about the music player and battery life in the SII, so I tried it.

The CPU usage stays at 0% when playing an mp3, only rising to 3% or 4% between tracks.

After playing music for 45 minutes, the phone isn't even slightly warm.

In summary: The Amazon reviewer's comments are utter BS!

A GPS is aided by the cellphone connection adding some general data about the satellite locations to speed up the fix but it still needs to see satellites to obtain a fix. I suggest you locate your unit near a window to improve the reception of satellite signals. Your house is likely shielding the signals. Some units can also use wifi and even celltower triangulation but these are not GPS. I do not know if you unit supports these additional methods.

Harry, I don't know about your car stereo particularly, but many aftermarket stereos that offer an Ipod interface also offer a USB interface that allows you to plug in an Android phone and navigate the memory of the phone to play music etc. It is a little more clunky than the Ipod interface, but works quite well.

Also, many stereos also offer bluetooth connectivity which is very nice (that is what I use from my Android HTC Thunderbolt to my stereo).
