Curious. What does the error look like when you get it (never had it myself)? Is it an error on the KT itself, and does it occur after a sync or can it just occur when you are using the device itself?

.. and what do people do when it happens? power on/off, or hard reset (lil pinhole button)?

This blog post has a photo of the storage error.

I select Cancel on the error, and I have been able to keep reading without problems so far. Seems like that is not always the case.

It's an error message that comes up when you power on the unit. Gives you a reset option, or an ignore option.

@rjcroy, PeterT: so it is some kind of data integrity/sub system check that is occuring on power on. I wonder what it is actually checking that is flagging the error. Particularly odd such that you can cancel and continue indicating that if there is any data corruption or such it is not so significant that you are encountering it.

Does this only occur when full power on (from off state) or also if it is in sleep mode? <- I never tend to turn mine entirely off.

Hopefully this 'is' a software thing and not some variance in manufacturing causing this check to fail because it seems odd that some of us are not getting it (though maybe just the right series/sequence of interactions with the device could also trigger it?)

@Sameer: are you able to speak to what this error is actually indicating/what check is occuring?

@molman: This only happens to me when booting from from the fully powered off state. I don't see it if I just put the Kobo into Sleep mode, and turn on again. My guess is that it is either a check of the integrity of the file system on the flash drive, or some test of the integrity of a database on the Kobo. But we are just speculating. People use Kobos is several different ways. But what has seemed to become more clear is that it is not a function of how you load books onto a Kobo that matters. People report the problem with all different methods.

Thanks for the insight. Maybe I've been avoiding by never really powering off.

As to your speculation, I would draw a similar conclusion without any further insight (Sameer care to share?)

Also as an aside has anyone hacked the firmware on previous Kobo's, or made any effort on the KT? If I understand right it's a Linux kernel under it all.

Exactly! And I have even seen it with NO loading of books! ie unit stable; power off; power on; no issues; read; power cycle... issues!

And not all of us can use it after the error. I can't do anything--no reading of books, no browsing of them. I just get a repeated prompt to go to kobosetup. I can't cancel. And Calibre has never seen either of my machines.

After my last factory reset, I migrated everything over to mac and haven't had the problem since. It's a good thing I have a mac, or I'd have gone back to my Kindle long ago. If by some mischance I get it again, I'm definitely giving up.

Is this error related to use of an MicroSD card? I haven't used one. I haven't seen the error. Almost all content I have on the KT is purchased kepub or commercial epubs (like library material). My KT is set to sleep first and then shut off completely in 30 min -- so it gets fully turned back on regularly. I use the KT daily.

So -- I do use ADE but not Calibre (at least not syncing). Most content moves over wifi because mostly I am reading kepubs.

So it appears that the resolution to this problem is near.
That's good to hear. Let's hope that puts an end to it.

The problem comes when you want to try managing your library or add new books. That's when things can get really flaky.

No link at all to the SD card; neither I nor my wife have one, yet we have both seen the error.

So you have found syncing content (just Kobo Desktop application or Adobe Desktop Editions?) from your Mac rather than a Windows PC has made a difference to not recieving this error?

.. and does your error look the same as rjcroy's (see link above)? ... because you say you can't cancel?

These issues all seem so odd being a little different for people, and using a different OS not causing the error is strange.
