This is smart engineering. Specs aren't everything, and usability and price deserve a seat at the table too. 16:9, isn't it?

I've been longing for a Android version of the iPod touch...the screen here is much bigger, but this may fit the bill rather nicely.

I hope you've seeded some to the tech reviewers so we can get an idea of its performance before we invest...

All those existing Android market existing games and apps scale really well, because they don't have to scale. We evaluated higher res screen options, but felt 800x480 gives more bang for the buck. I feel for you though, I run dual 2560x1600 30" on my desktop.

Thanks for the honest response! I'd be willing to at least give it a chance if I could see one in person. I hadn't considered the app scaling issue. I'd be interested to see how sharp text looks in some of the ereader apps. That's one of the things that I don't like about my Pandigital Novel.

Is there a store where I can see this hands on or is it only available online?

the new lenovo ideapad looks to be a great contender:
http://www.androidcentral.com/lenovo...apad-a1-tablet

I can't find it on the Lenovo website yet. Specs look similar to the Nook color. 7" Screen, running Gingerbread, w/ Front Camera, rear camera, and available in 8gb, 16gb or 32 gb. The 8gb will list for $200; 16gb for $250. Sounds like the 16gb and 32gb variants are destined for the U.S.

According to the blurb:

"When it comes to storage, you're looking at 8GB, 16GB and 32GB - which versions will be available in the US isn't known at this time..."

The Airpad is available in the US only right now, and Canada soon.

My concern on devices running older versions of Android is app compatibility due to the fairly fugly OS fragmentation we see right now. Too many versions running on different platforms. I know that Android 2.xx is essentially geared toward phone size devices but just how long will developers support that idea? Or are my concerns not needed because to the end user there isn't an issue of cross-platform/OS version compatibility?

So I am just very leery of buying a new device running an OS from last summer that I expect to use for at least 4 years. I was burned by the fiasco that was the Nokia Internet Tablet running that awful OS-whatever and swore to never again buy into anything close to that experience. That is why I am liking Android but the fragmentation of the OS and the sense even v2.3 is already obsolete concerns me. I've just gotten too old to remain willing to stay on this disposable hardware idea we have seen mushroom with phones. I am totally tired of it in fact.

I don't think v2.3 is obsolete, 10s of millions of phones and tablets run this version. The number of Honeycomb devices is very small right now by comparison, especially since it is being limited by closed source practices. It would be nice to unify the versions again, hopefully this will happen soon.
