I don't care for the 'chrome' of iBooks, the lack of discoverability of the iBookstore (including no search engine access), and lack of reading apps for non-iOS devices. Since the price of everything by definition (agency model) is the same as every other ebook storefront, there's negative incentive to purchase any ebooks from Apple, since every other store does not have these limitations and is thus a better value. One of the best things about ePub is the portability (even with DRM) and Apple just doesn't provide that.

Of course if it all goes DRM free most of these objections evaporate. But I'd be very surprised if that happens in the next couple of years.

An iBooks for Android app and ditching Agency pricing.

What does iOS 5 have to do with it? Are you saying that Apple can't walk and chew gum at the same time?

I never buy anything from the iBooks store. I like to format my books via calibre if need be and it's exceedingly difficult (if not downright impossible) to do that with ibooks.

I'm saying that Apple can't walk, chew gum, and juggle 10 plates at the same time

Apple is working on getting out Ios5, Iphone 5, Ipod touch5?/ Iphone 5 lite?, and Icloud by September/October.
In addition, Apple is negotiating new contracts with various media companies for streaming content AND with those companies to release magazine content via its brand new Newstand feature. That's enough on Apple's plate for a while. And right after all it has to gear up for Ipad3 .

I see Apple not focusing on Ibooks till the Ios6 release cycle next year.

Translation: agency pricing for magazines to neutralize the competition.

Definitely curious what "Newstand" will bring to the table- is it just an iBookstore for periodicals, or something more?

Think more iTunes for periodicals. Its going to make subscribing for periodicals very easy and automatic, and all you'll have to do is remember one password.
The publishers hope (and fear) that Newsstand will do for periodicals what iTunes did for music. We'll see.
If that model succeeds, you might see some kind opf subscription model happen for iBooks , although that's more of a stretch. I don't think we fully know yet what Apple's plan for ebooks is yet.
