That was my first guess as well, since you have to manually switch between the two modes. If it still isn't working, my next question would be about your PE version/settings. I haven't upgraded past the normal ermine yet, so maybe you have.

I would also suggest you use the patched wpa_supplicant instead of zt switcher method of getting adhoc working. The advantage is that you do not have to manually switch between adhoc/infrastructure and the adhoc networks show up in the regular list of available networks. It is much more convenient.
