Ars Technica had a similar story this morning. I'm surprised that there is such a thriving "junk book" market. Who buys this crud? Between the ability to sample and the return policy I'm surprised that these sorts of scams would be profitable.

It's profitable because it costs next to nothing to distribute a junk book to millions of potential customers. If only a tiny, tiny percentage buy, you are still making money...and it's almost as cheap to distribute 1000's of junk books as it is to distribute one.

Yes, by simply replacing the "Send Sample" Button with a "Send Book" Button the problem would be solved. Obviously there are methods for making the sample look good enough to warrant a purchase, while the rest of the book is complete garbage.

Why are Nigerian scams so successful? At least these people are providing a "product."
