I really hope that the firmware is provided with something that makes it less than impossible for the customer to use.
I would expect them to release a DVD for the user since the device is not likely to even be hooked to a computer.

I even ran into the problem trying to watch TV on my tuner card when a show was broadcast with the secure-bit (or whatever they're calling it) active, and had to switch over to the standard cable box. I have my PS3 hooked up to the TV via a HDMI-to-DVI convertor and haven't had any problems just yet watching BD-DVD's, but then again I don't own too many of them since they are so over-priced.

I can understand why they do this, to prevent people from capturing the signal and later distributing it, but it's still a PITA for me to have to deal with.
Already!?! I expected it to happen eventually but this soon?!?

BTW, were you running Vista? I really truly hope you did not have this problem under XP.

All DRM does is hurt honest people. Those not honest will usually find a way to break the DRM or find it out on the net already broken. What happens though is an honest person pays for something with DRM, the DRM gets in the way so this person goes to find it cracked on the net and find other stuff for free along the way and ends up downloading that too and not paying for it. So here is a case of DRM causing a loss in revenue where it would not have had the DRM not been there.

I agree. In many cases we're running into situations where things are completely turned on their head. Instead of spending money on something meaning you get a better copy, one that just works, now it means a more limited copy that's often lower quality and may require crap like flashing your firmware to view. DRM's enough of a hassle that if the pirate stuff had DRM nobody would steal anything. It's the honest consumers who're getting rooked.

Funny that.

It would be one thing if Sony had put out these new DRM laden DVDs and was able to put in a disclaimer that you would need to upgrade your firmware on your DVD player and to call support for help if need be or to check their website as long as ALL players had firmware upgrades. If I had purchased the DVD and then had to go back to the store to return it, I'd be asking for the cost of fuel and the cost of my time since this is not my fault.

DRM = industries spending millions chasing that last couple of percent of profit from consumers and in the process shooting themselves in the foot by pissing off their consumers who eventually realise that they can get around that problem they had last year by downloading a pirated copy.

Why are you blaming Sony for this? Sounds as though it's Fox who've screwed up here, not Sony.

Are you sure it's Fox who put the new DRM on these DVDs and not Sony?

Sony may set the standards, but it was Fox who made the actual DVDs. Fox made the decision to use the latest DRM.

But, Sony released this DRM nonsense to Fox and probably told Fox it was ok to use.

Sony define the standard; it's the player manufacturer who decides which aspects of the standard to implement in their device.

To blame Sony for this would be like blaming the creators of the older DVD standard for the decision of a movie study to release a "dual layer" DVD in the days before the majority of players supported them. Dual layer support was a part of the DVD standard long before players supported it. Similarly there are aspects of the Blu-Ray standard which current players don't currently implement.

It's surprising that no one has mentioned "DRM" in the context of the awful "Don't copy that floppy" days. Copy protection schemes were used by many companies, like Lotus, to "protect" their IP. So, if you had bought a copy of, for example, WordPerfect (another company that used copy protection on distro floppies), and your install floppy went bad, WordPerfect would charge you full price of the program to replace it.

Of course, these copy protected floppies COULD be copied, if you wanted to buy a Central Point (the people who now make Spyware Doctor) Option Board. Mine paid for itself within 1 month of purchase- lots of people wanted backup copies of the software that they had legally purchased. My point? EVERY DRM scheme can be hacked, and will be hacked. And most, especially the ones that make it difficult for paying consumers to enjoy the content that they bought, will quickly disappear.
