My guess is that she has no easy way to apply technological geo-restrictions on intl sales, and thus may have a gentlemen's agreement with the U.S. publisher that she will note the appropriate territories in and around the books, and hope there isn't too much spillover. I'm guessing this because I have a book in a very similar situation, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the U.S. publisher will make this kind of gentlemen's agreement with me.

(I hadn't seen the explanatory passage you quoted, but I did see--after I bought the books--a notice on the copyright page that this edition was intended for sale outside N. America.)

As a courtesy to Diane and her publisher, it might nice to keep our voices down about this.

I purchased the books because there has been a lot of praise for these books both here and on Teleread. I have to say, having read the first two-thirds of the first book, So You want to be a Wizard, that if I were 8 to 10 years old, I think these books would be great, assuming I had never read the Harry Potter books, but as an adult, I think I wasted my money. However, having bought them, I'll try to slog through them. I also think any young person who has read the Harry Potter books would find these books lacking, at least based on what I have read so far. Perhaps it gets better; here's hoping.

Well, they are young adult novels, after all. And since the early ones preceded Harry Potter by about twenty years, I'm not sure it's quite fair to say they don't work well in the footsteps of HP. They're very different kinds of books, in any case. But obviously, everyone's tastes won't agree. If you don't like it by the end of Book 2 (which I seem to recall is stronger than book 1), then you probably won't like the rest. But I'd try to read that much, anyway.

Diane Duane herself noted that her writing has matured since those early books, which is one reason she's revising the first few for new editions.

I have read the first one, and thought it was pretty good. I don't read much fantasy/sci-fi (adult or YA), and I wouldn't have paid "full price" for the rest. The bundle deal is good enough, though, that I went ahead with the purchase. And, I love that the author is selling them on her own website, and I like to support this kind of effort.
